Description

4-2 Journal: Experience with Gender Archetypes The news article I found really put gender inequality into place for me. I have always known that between the two genders, we are unequal, but after reading a few news stories I realized how bad some cases could be. The article I am using for this assignment is about nonprofit organizations helping locals in different countries such as Asia, Africa, and Latin America, work on solving poverty, as well as providing programs that are helping men and woman with gender inequality (Lutheran, 2016). These programs are helping with giving access to food, raising awareness of gender issues, getting people involved, and most importantly showing that men and woman can work together and achieve a better result. After reading about the scarcity of agriculture and food and the problems these women are having all over the world, I thought of Hansel and Gretel. The hungry children whose mother decided to give them up. The parents set off into the woods to abandon Hansel and Gretel because they were too poor to feed them. Assuming from the story, the dad does all the hunting and working and the mom was always left to care for the children and the house. With these gender roles applied in this fairy tale, it would make a lot more sense for the mom and dad to work together to find a solution than it is for the mom to make the decision to abandon the children in the woods. Referring to the article, working together instead of against each other is the best way to handle tough situations. I think it is also worth mentioning that Hansel and Gretel work together to find their way home, and to escape from the witch who lived in the little house made out of food. My final project is based on Loki the trickster god, and Seth the ancient Egyptian trickster god. I am not sure if the gender archetype could be applied to make a point in my final, but I think that being male gods could a lot to do with their behaviors. You don’t really hear about female tricksters, if there are any. References Lutheran World Reflief. (2016, November 18). Nurturing Women Leaders in Honduras [Web log post].
