1. Thinking of the work selected, explore how acts of creative expression impact, and are impacted by, the people and situations surrounding them. The cultural work I selected was the movie American History X. This is one of the more controversial movies ever made. It brought to light the terrible things that racial gangs have been doing to each-other for a very long time. It also shows that not only racism but anti-Semitism still exists in our culture. Movies like this that show racism and anti-Semitism are hard for many people to watch either because they don’t believe this exists in our society or that they feel the direct impact from said racism, and it affects their daily lives. 2. State questions about the relationship between culture and expression. How does culture benefit from expression? How does one’s culture benefit from the different ways that it is expressed? What are the positive and negative expressions of culture? 3. State questions about your values and how they are shaped by the expression of others. How do we determine our values? Are they ours to determine, or are they determined by society? How do my values affect other people’s image of me? 4. Determine how you would go about answering the questions posed.

The way I would go about answering these questions about culture and expressions would be to look at others’ views on how their culture may have been affected by expressions. Social media is a huge source for these types of stories so I feel I would definitely start there. I feel answering the questions about my own values would require a lot of self-reflection. Looking back at where my beliefs came from whether it be adopting my parents’ values and beliefs, or the tv I watched as a kid and how that guided my beliefs. This is definitely how I would attempt to answer these questions....
