Description

Travel Agency Project – 10% of Final Grade 

Act as a travel agency that is promoting a vacation trip to another location in the Solar System. -- Location: Mars  Olympus Mons -- Theme: Mountain Climbing  Reason for Picking Mars: Mountain Climbing (Tallest Mountains in the Solar System -- Advertising Materials: Tri-Fold Poster Board, Pictures, Typed-Report, Stickers, Colored Markers  Estimate the duration (time) of the vacation  Estimate the cost per person. You cannot assume technology we do not currently possess – no Star Trek-like warp speed, for example – but can assume we can get a traveler to & from the location spot safely.

*Remember that the trip is meant to be a vacation – travelers can do science if they wish, but that should not be the primary goal of the trip. *You are advertising the trip, so make it as attractive as possible (lots of pictures will help!). Sightseeing should be a major component of any vacation trip such as this, so focus your advertising efforts accordingly. *Many of your facts and statements about your object should be on the brochure (or poster, or whatever advertising materials you craft). -- Note the cost of any such trip is prohibitive, so we will not consider that aspect. *On the due date of the project, teams will set up their advertising materials in the lecture hall for others to see. Solar System Vacation Report Guidelines Submit a report about your vacation advertisement, to include the following:  

The report should have a cover sheet with the name of your travel agency, team members, the class (AST 111), the date, and the instructor. Construct a table summarizing key properties of your object. You want to give your prospective clients a complete experience, including what travelers should expect of their new environment, so you need to include the following: o Surface gravity of the object compared to the Earth (for example, if Earth’s gravity = 1, then the Moon’s is about 1/6) o Atmosphere

 Surface pressure (compared to Earth)  Constituents & percentages (95% CO2 on Venus, for example)  Range of temperatures, in both kelvins and degrees Fahrenheit o Appearance of sky  Duration of solar day  Color of daytime sky  Potential weather (Wind? Rain? Snow? Clear skies? Etc.)  Other objects (moons, planets etc.) prominent in the sky – the Moon in the Earth’s sky is a good example  Size (in terms of area) of the Sun, in comparison to the Sun in Earth’s sky. For example, the Sun on Jupiter is about 4% as large in area as it is from Earth, meaning Jupiter receives about 4% as much sunlight as does Earth. o Sightseeing  Famous feature(s) one would wish to see. For example, suppose you advertise Valles Marineris (“Mariner Valley”) on Mars. You should tell the width, depth, and length of the valley, and compare it to a comparable feature (the Grand Canyon) on Earth. 

Note in a separate written section how you obtained your information. If it is a fact that you looked up, cite the source; if it required a calculation, then show how that was done. Wikipedia is permissible as a source of basic information, but keep in mind it is a secondary source, and therefore not always accurate. Assume that sufficient food, drink, clothing & equipment are included. Always have units accompany values of properties Briefly discuss the theme of the vacation Briefly discuss the time spent on vacation, including travel there & back A travel brochure or other advertising materials are to be separate from the report Summarize the report by describing the reason for your choice of object Include a separate references (works cited) page. MLA format is fine. There should be at least 3 references (the textbook and Wikipedia do not count). The report does not have a specific page limit.

Properties of Mars Property Acceleration of Gravity Atmospheric Pressure Atmospheric Constituents

Value (units)

Range of Temperatures Duration of Solar Day Color of Daytime Sky Weather conditions Prominent objects in sky Size of Sun (Earth = 1) Famous Feature(s)

Each property is worth 5 points – 2 points for being entered properly into the table, and 3 points for describing (in the written section of the report) how it was found and/or determined. Ten entries at five points each counts for 50 possible points.

Each category of the written report is worth up to 5 points. Ten categories at five points each gives a possible total of 50 points.

Your advertisements (brochures, posters etc.) will be shown off in class on the due date of the project. Students will rank their favorite vacation offers, and the three best will earn extra credit (Best earns 5 points, 2nd best earns 4 points, 3rd best earns 3 points).

Overall Grading of Project 

50 points from table & associated properties  50 points from quality of written report  100 total points
