Pettee 1 Bradley Pettee Tammy Stone English Composition I 12 February 2017 Every Opportunity I started my freshman year of high school like most, jobless and dependent. I was driving mommy and daddy’s cars to school and hockey practice. Winter break came around and I found myself bored and began to think about jobs. Like any high schooler, I wanted to make a lot of money without doing a lot of work. The job search was a wash until I was approached by a teammate’s grandfather who offered me a job working for him and that’s what made me realize every opportunity is one to capitalize on. I was hesitant to take the job at this old-school service station. I didn’t know much about cars or anything the job entailed. My first day on the I found out the real reason I was sought out and hired. He said he wanted the work ethic in his shop that he saw me express on the ice. I had to let that sink in for a second because I had now idea that I had a “work ethic.” As the day went on I was convinced I had to keep this job because I had an amazing burger for lunch made by his manager and wouldn’t mind a lunch like that every day I came to work. Nightshift rolled around and I was introduced to a whole new staff. Nightshift meant Mike, the boss, and the managers went home for the night. As I grew more comfortable with the coworkers I was working with that night, I learned more about what my job was, what was expected of me and how to be the best I could be. Throughout the night, I became more open with my coworkers and it didn’t take long for them to be considered friends. We were friends

Pettee 2 over the course of our high school years and as we got older we talked about collage. I was at the point in my life I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I grew up but I heard Mick, wanted to be a lineman. I had been interested in electricity since I was a child so his career choice sparked my interest and decided to follow in his footsteps. The opportunity arose to attend Dakota County Technical College’s Electrical Lineman program. I continued through this course with the advice from Mick and loved every aspect of the career choice I made. After the schooling, we both proceeded on to work for Xcel Energy. He worked for the company for two years and I worked there for one, until he passed away. I took a short leave from work to cope with the loss and then went back to work there the following summer. Struggling to cope with the loss, I decided to make a career change and pursue nursing. Taking every opportunity is important in life. Trying something new is the only way to figure out the best path to take when looking ahead in life. Taking something away from every opportunity I have been faced with is something that helps me follow the best path for me in life and since then I have grown to reflect and thank everyone who has taught me everything I know....
