COMM 1200: PUBLIC SPEAKING Natalie Lay, 9/13/19 Week 4 Assignment: Informative Outline Rough Draft Template

Marijuana and its Purpose in the Medical Field Specific Purpose: To communicate what marijuana is, the overall effects of the drug, and how it is used in the medical field. Thesis: Using my 3 main points, I am going to inform you about marijuana and its medicinal purposes. Introduction 1. Attention Getter: How many of you have experienced a loved one being sick? Okay, now how many of you have seen their pain, their struggle to feel content and at ease going through treatment or recovery? What if I told you that there is something out there that could ease that pain without taking pills that bring them down and take themselves out of their body, would you do it? Medical Marijuana is the solution. 2. Relevance Statement: If I went around the room, I’m sure almost all of you have tried marijuana or know someone who has and you aren’t as informed about its uses and effects as you may think you are. 3. Thesis Statement: Using my 3 main points, I am going to inform you about marijuana and its medicinal purposes. 4. Credibility (expertise and interest): This topic is important to me as I have first hand experience of the lack of knowledge about medical marijuana and have even deepen my understanding of marijuana throughout my research of this topic.

Main Points: 1. Point 1- What is marijuana and how does it work? 2. Point 2- What are the effects and uses for marijuana? 3. Point 3- How is marijuana used in the medical field? Body 1. What is marijuana and how exactly does it work? What is medical marijuana? A. What is marijuana? -Marijuana refers to the dried leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds from the Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indica plant. The plant contains the mindaltering chemical THC and other similar compounds. -Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States. Its use is widespread among young people. In 2015, more than 11 million young adults ages 18 to 25 used marijuana in the past year. B. Different types of marijuana -THC- THC can increase appetite and reduce nausea. THC may also decrease pain, inflammation (swelling and redness), and muscle control problems. -CBD- CBD is a cannabinoid that doesn't make people "high." These drugs aren't popular for recreational use because they aren't intoxicating. It may be useful in reducing pain and inflammation, controlling epileptic

seizures, and possibly even treating mental illness and addictions. C. What is medical marijuana? -

“The term medical marijuana refers to using the whole, unprocessed marijuana plant or its basic extracts to treat symptoms of illness and other conditions.”

-

“Currently, the two main cannabinoids from the marijuana plant that are of medical interest are THC and CBD (has no high).”

Transition Statement: Now that I have given you some background information on what marijuana is, let's look at the effects and uses for marijuana. 1. What are the effects and the uses for marijuana? A. Effects -

When a person smokes marijuana, THC quickly passes from the lungs into the bloodstream. The blood carries the chemical to the brain and other organs throughout the body. The body absorbs THC more slowly when the person eats or drinks it. In that case, they generally feel the effects after 30 minutes to 1 hour.

-

Marijuana overactivates parts of the brain that contain the highest number of these receptors. This causes the "high" that people feel. Other effects include: altered senses (for example, seeing brighter colors), altered sense of time, changes in mood, impaired body movement, difficulty with thinking and problem-solving, impaired memory

B. Recreational uses -People smoke marijuana in hand-rolled cigarettes (joints) or in pipes or water pipes (bongs). They also smoke it in blunts—emptied cigars that have been partly or completely refilled with marijuana. -People can mix marijuana in food (edibles), such as brownies, cookies, or candy, or brew it as a tea. A newly popular method of use is smoking or eating different forms of THC-rich resins C. Medical Purpose -

Ease pain

-

Seizures

Transition Statement: After learning about the effects and uses for marijuana, I’m now going to explain its role being played in the medical field. 1. How does marijuana fit into the medical field and how is it used for medicinal purposes? A. Controlling epilectic seizures -

“The FDA approved a CBD-based liquid medication called Epidiolex for the treatment of two forms of severe childhood epilepsy, Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.”

-

However, there is recent, rigorous research that suggests that the oral version of the CBD, a highly formulated pharmaceutical-grade medication, is effective, particularly in some children with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome, both treatment-

resistant forms of epilepsy. B. Assistance with cancer patients -

“Recent animal studies have shown that marijuana extracts may help kill certain cancer cells and reduce the size of others.”

-

“Research in mice showed that treatment with purified extracts of THC and CBD, when used with radiation, increased the cancerkilling effects of the radiation.”

C. Pain Management -The most common use for medical marijuana in the United States is for pain control. While marijuana isn’t strong enough for severe pain (for example, post-surgical pain or a broken bone), it is quite effective for the chronic pain that plagues millions of Americans, especially as they age. -In particular, marijuana appears to ease the pain of multiple sclerosis, and nerve pain in general. This is an area where few other options exist, and those that do, such as Neurontin, Lyrica, or opiates are highly sedating. Patients claim that marijuana allows them to resume their previous activities without feeling completely out of it and disengaged. Transition Statement: I just shared with you how marijuana is used as medicine. Let's look back at what I’ve informed you all. Conclusion 1. Restate Main Points

A. Marijuana is derived from a plant. There are two types of marijuana, THC and CBD. CBD does not create the “high” that THC does B. Marijuana can be used for recreational use and also for medical use. When you use THC, you feel a sense of a “high” which comes with altered senses. C. Marijuana is used in the medical field. It’s used for pain management, epilepsy, and also to decrease cancer cells and increase effects of radiation. 2. Clincher: In the beginning of this speech, I asked you all a question. I asked, if there is something out there that could ease the pain of your loved one without taking pills that bring them down and take themselves out of their body, would you do it? I want to ask you the same question. After being informed about what medical marijuana is, how it works, would you do it?...
