Shane Mosley 11/01/2020 English A Frank Hodges American Horror Story: Coven Review Introduction to American Horror Story American Horror Story is a horror television series where every season takes place in a different place and time; however, they all tie together by very small details and character references to make a detailed world with twisted stories. The order in chronological order according to the American horror story timeline is Season 4: Freak show 1952, Season 2: Asylum 1952, Season 9: 1984 1984, Season 1: Murder House 2011, Season 3: Coven 2013, Season 6: Roanoke 20142016, Season 5: Hotel 2015, Season 7: Cult 2017, Season 8: Apocalypse 2020-2021. Each season coming out in a different order than the chronological timeline. With that being said as an audience member you get to watch all of the small connections be made and you get to take time see how each world plays into the next. For this review, however, I chose to specifically review season 3: Coven due to the fact that, that is where many start to see large ties to other seasons and foreshadowing for newer seasons. Therefore, I chose to for my criteria are the following: Characters, Timeline, and Tone. Characters Throughout this season we begin to see ties from previous seasons when it comes to names, locations, and maybe even some familiar flash backs that the characters may be having. Fiona Goode in Coven is considered the supreme witch with her daughter Cordelia Goode who holds a boarding school for young women with “exceptional talents” meaning a house for witches. These two characters play a detrimental part of the entire American Horror Story franchise due to the fact that the show follows the seven circles of hell and the witches do all the dirty land work for the devil himself. So, the supreme witch has many orders to follow out in the name of the devil and throughout the seasons you will see things unfold due to interference from witchcraft even though witches may not be the focal point of the season. Another character that holds significance to the series is Madison Montgomery who is related to a serial killer in a previous season of the show. She is a significant character because she not only is she related to a character from a different season and a different timeline, but she also happens to challenge many of her peers in a challenge to see who is going to be the next supreme leader so, she is the antagonist of the protagonist group which adds dynamic into the group setting. Maddison also happens to appear again in a later season because she helps fight off Lucifer with the supreme witch and her coven. Timeline The timeline for this season goes from 1692 to 2014 through a series of stories, flashbacks, and whole scene set ups that walk through the events. It seems scattered when its viewed on a written platform, however, on film it all seamlessly flows together. The creators made sure to tie in a history timeline along with their own characters timelines which adds some spice to factual events in history. They were also able to spice up the timeline by adding factual, and fictional gore to the episodes that kept the fan intrigued and coming back for more. Covens timeline starts in 1692 where the supreme witch at the time was located in Salem during the witch trials.

The supreme witch committed suicide in order to save her coven and help them relocate in New Orleans, where the rest of the season takes place.
