Description

In the Lottery, a portion of the youngsters partake in a fairly odd movement; "Bobby and Harry Jones and Dickie Delacroix...Eventually made an incredible heap of stones...And protected it against the attacks of different young men". From the outset, it just may seem like the children are as a rule senseless, yet it is subsequently uncovered that this heap is utilized to stone Tessie Hutchinson, and obviously, these children aren't exactly pretty much as happy as one may have suspected. What's more, Tessie responds rather strangely to winning the lottery, something which is ordinarily seen as a positive result. In this way, it is right of the examiner to be dubious of its actual importance.

The irony is an underlying theme in "The Lottery," which runs throughout the plot. The scene opens on a “clear and sunny” day, but the film ends with the gruesome murder of a housewife. Mr. Graves and Mr. Summers, the two men who effectively run the area have ironic names as well. Furthermore, in the novel, the characters and the narrator make ironic comments, Mr. Summers is the mayor of the town and the owner of the town's most profitable enterprise, the coal mine. Summer conjures up visions of joy and happiness in most people's minds. His name is ironic because his career is basically the polar opposite of these concepts. He is in charge of the indiscriminate killing of a villager, which does not seem to be a fun activity. In a way you can say that Shirley Summers makes use of irony in order to make the story more entertaining, the title of the story makes the reader believe that winning the lottery is a good thing, however, in the story, winning the lottery is used to pick a human sacrifice in the area. Shirley Jackson tells the story well by gradually showing the irony....
