Description

HR Strategy/Development – OL-442 4-3 Short Paper: Case Study: Recruiting at Kia Dawn Austin

Describe how employing a large number of new workers requires strategic recruiting planning and operational efforts, and discuss what aspects might be different in smaller firms. Whether you are employing a large number of new workers or a small number of workers, they both require strategic recruiting, planning, and operational efforts. But, employing a large number of workers can be challenging for any organization. Kia sets a very strong example of planning, recruiting, and managing their operational efforts successfully. Kia is a large company that was looking to fill an array of positions for their new plant in West Point, Georgia. They laid out a strategic plan and the HR Director visited colleges and churches, appeared on radio and television shows, and used other means to market Kia’s recruiting and employment efforts. They also had their own online application process for applicants only, provided computers at locations for those applicants who did not have home-based internet, and worked with the Georgia Department of Labor. All of these efforts paid off as they were able to quickly identify applicants who matched the available jobs. Their recruiting efforts resulted in Kia hiring 500 employees within 6 months and an additional 1200 within a year. Unfortunately, smaller businesses have limited resources. The smaller businesses could go to colleges and churches, and perhaps place a small ad in the local newspaper. But, they most likely would be unable to afford to have extra computers set up for those who don’t have homebased internet, nor would they be able to have their own applicant system. Discuss how utilizing the Internet, like Kia did and other employers do, is changing how recruiting efforts are occurring for a variety of jobs in employers of different sizes.

Technology is always changing and advancing so it’s imperative that businesses are aware of these changes and use them to their advantage. More and more people have access to the internet, whether it’s a computer, phone, or even a watch nowadays. Using the internet to recruit is much faster. An applicant can apply quickly and easily and HR can email an applicant, and in a matter of seconds, receive a reply. Using the internet also allows recruiters to work on a much larger scale. They can “post multiple job advertisements for many different roles and manage those communications too all from one place” (recruiter.com, 2021). This allows for weeding out the unqualified candidates and finding qualified candidates for the right position. Internet usage makes researching potential applicants easier and cheaper. Instead of flying an applicant to the job interview, you can now hold virtual interviews, saving the company money.
