Description

Article: why it took a 100 years for Americans to learn about the tulsa massacre This phenomenal article was written about the gruesome massacre that occurred in the prosperous black district of greenwood located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. A great misfortune of events that took place after a trial against an accused young black man, a man that wasn’t charged by the victim yet still was persecuted for the suspected assault of the white female. Blacks and Whites protested at the courthouse of the ongoing trial, and the situation took a turn for the worse, resulting in riots of white supremacists targeting the “black wall street”. Looting the city, murdering its people, burning the structures, but perhaps worst of all manipulating history to hide the crimes of racism and injustice. The records from the incident were destroyed, even the first news article that was made public to alert the people of the misfortune was later erased from records. The incident was covered by the whites just like many murders of that time, the dark history of America was being erased from paper but not from the minds of the survivors. The recollection of the Tulsa race massacre is recalled through the memories of the people, and some pictures that serve as its proof are the postcards printed by the white supremacists. The survivors of the massacre were alive in the 1900s and were interviewed by journalists, today those survivors don't live to retell those stories but many records have been recorded and there are written recollections of the incident as well. Tulsa race Massacre had left an traumatic impact on it’s survivors, an impact that caused years of silence among the community. People tried to forget the horrors of that time but fortunately the new generations of blacks have sought justice for their predecessors. As the article states, “That racial reconciliation will involve the acknowledgment of the wrong that’s been done, an apology, and atonement.” -Cineas. It is just as important knowing the history and stories of the murdered in that massacre now as it was 92 years ago because it is the history of our people and its tragedy that contributes to the making and shaping of our culture as well as society. The tulsa killings were not an isolated incident, the KKK was prevalent at the time and blacks were murdered all over the country. Tulsa is just one of the cities that's moving in the right direction in the matter of racial justice. History should not be hidden, rather acknowledged and understood. The story of these victims should be taught in schools and their unmarked graves must be labeled and acknowledged for the future of the black community....
