Essay:

The poem “The House of my Childhood” by Dilip Chitre is an autobiographical poem and reminiscent in nature. The poet brings in a vivid picture of his ancestral home. The speaker of the poem had spent his childhood days in that home but now it is desolate. He tries to recall the past memories imprinted on his mind. The poet visited the empty house. He sees the old grindstone of his grandmother and a few brass figurines that no one took possession. He walks around the house and inside the rooms and gathered the memories of old moments. The poet is flooded with a feeling of nostalgia.

The poem portrays the house of his childhood which stands empty on a grey hill. The ‘grey’ symbolizes the desolation. All the valuable things of the house have been taken off and only the grandmother’s grindstone and her brass figurines are left over. The grandmother was a devout woman traditional in character. She was engaged in the household works the whole day and also found time to pray. The entire place seems to be changed with modernity but the poet could still remember the voices of the people and the songs of the birds. He feels he could still hear his grandmother’s voice on the bare tree. While standing there he thinks about the change time has brought in. Many a summer and spring have come and gone. He turns into a melancholic mood where his silence becomes eloquence. The poet is now a grown up man but he becomes like a child toddling around the empty house.

The poem depicts ancestral house of the poet in which he spent the whole of his childhood. The house is desolate after the death of his grandmother. The grandmother and the house can be considered as the fulcrum of the family which reunites the scattered members at some or other time. But now the grandmother is dead and the poet shows a situation where family bonds are uprooted and disintegrating to a condition of none for none....
