2 FIVE WAYS TO LISTEN In Julian Treasure’s TED Talk, he discussed five ways to enhance our consciousness and improve our listening skills. The five skills included: silence, the mixer, savoring, listening positions, and the acronym “RASA” (receive, appreciate, summarize, and ask). Of his five suggestions, I tested out the silence approach by taking three minutes a day of silence. During my quiet times throughout the day, it typically consists of me being on my phone in my own room or napping. However, though the week, I did not use my phone and decided to sit in silence and listen to the natural noises around me. Moreover, this method to listen better was very successful for me after the week was completed. Not only was I able to listen to the nature and environment around me, such as birds and cars passing by, I was also able to find a sense of relaxation. However, after testing the silence approach out on the first day, I noticed it was not very easy to focus when I did not have something to keep me busy. But, throughout the week, I found comfort in the silence and let it be a way to relieve the stress of midterm-season for myself. Furthermore, I would argue that sitting in silence indeed improves consciousness to the surrounding environment, and when I was on my phone or browsing the web on my laptop, I was unable to entirely focus and listen to the noises around me.
