6-1 Presentation Progress Check I.

Provide a brief overview of the social scientific background of your issue and research question. How is the issue situated within the social sciences? I am researching this topic as I am a Command Drug and Alcohol Advisor at my command, a substance abuse counselor. Due to the increase of drug users in the United States, my research question is which drug treatment is the more successful voluntary or involuntary treatment? This problem can be related to social science by applying social principles. Social Roles, We know that when people are younger are less reluctant to receive voluntary treatment. Social Norms, most drug users believe that they can stop at will: social institution, Government, and Private Health treatment and Services. Belief and Values, even though most people value their health, believe that they control the problem or that no one will notice their situation.

II.

Explain how the issue impacts the audience. In other words, how is the issue relevant to members of the audience? Why should the audience care about the response to your question or the outcome of your investigation? Support your response with specific examples from your research investigation. I believe that my research will bring attention to the problem and pique my audience's interest. In addition, I hope that my research will encourage my audience to dip more profound in the topic, enabling the audience to search for more information about the subject, especially those facing the same situation within their own family or friends. The data can also help them find the appropriate treatment services and facilities. It is known that Substance abusers are the result of the environment and culture they grew in. "Sociocultural beliefs can shape the approach to and behavior regarding substance 2|Page

Due to my research, my audience will gain enough information to help them take action and not ignore the problem. In today's society ew all have been affected due to the rise of drug abusers, now more than ever, as it has also gained attention from the United States Congress. "Abuse of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs is costly to our Nation, exacting more than $740 billion annually in costs related to crime, lost work productivity and health care." (Abuse. 2017)

III.

Describe the evidence you have to support your conclusions about the impact of the issue on you personally and on your audience. Support your response with specific examples from your research investigation.

Through my research, I discover the impact and struggles that substance abuse has to go through. In the article Drug Abuse in the Rise Because of Covid-19, the “CDC also said 13.3% of respondents reported starting or increasing substance abuse (including drugs and alcohol). Another key point about voluntary treatment vs involuntary treatment we can see in some of the statistics “Between 85 percent and 95 percent of all people who successfully complete drug rehab report still being abstinent from all drugs nine months after discharge.” In the following statistic we

IV.

Explain why this issue is important to you personally. In other words, why did you select this issue to investigate?

I have chosen this topic because almost every family in the United States have been touch by some kind of addiction or substance abuse. My family has struggle with substances abuser in the past and we have seen the effect that has in and around the family and the community. Even today as Command DAPA I have seen a lot of sailor struggle with addiction and putting an end to their careers.

V.

Illustrate how your investigation of the issue impacted the way you thought about the issue. In other words, how did thinking like a scientist to research and develop a question affect what you thought about the issue you selected? How did social scientific thinking change the lens through which you viewed the issue? Support your response with specific examples from your research investigation.

I chose this topic because it intrigued me due to seeing family and friends struggle with addiction. However, through the research, I was unaware of all the factors that play a role in patient recovery. I was looking at this through a single lens without the impact was having on an individual. After starting my research, I was getting more involved in the subject, more importantly, from the statistics from different facilities 4|Page

All these facilities and different Government driven websites about statistics because all the rehabilitation facilities, private or public, have to follow the same norm. It does not matter if they are five stars or less. They all have to report to the Government and all procedures, successes, and failures on treatment. Therefore, I didn't have any knowledge of how social roles play a vital role in treatment success. The following table shows the total number of substance abuse treatment facilities in the United States.

Every year we can see a rise in the number of cases of substance abuser. 5|Page

6-1 Presentation Progress Check Through that last decade, the amount of illegal and prescription drug use has increased. "Within the United States alone, drug overdose related deaths increased by 33% within the past 5 years." But, the implications drug use has on those individuals should not be taken lightly, and the problem we are facing is the widespread acceptance of drug use in our culture. " Obviously, the fact that 500 people are going to succumb to addiction this year is just a terrible tragedy," Senator Jeb Bradley "It reminds us all that we have to make sure that we ... monitor carefully what's working and what isn't and be prepared as we come back in January to address this issue." (Fox News, 2016)

Our environment plays a direct role in the rise of drug abuse. "One social factor that contributes to addiction is the tendency for drug and alcohol abuse to promote group solidarity and feelings of community and belonging." (Rehab, 2017). The more problematic is that some numbers indicated that teenagers have been using drugs to gain or develop a sense of identity. If we a few years back, one commercial that comes to mind is the one from the Truth. They talked about the implications and effects of drug use by teenagers and the consequences in their developing brains. Drug use has become an enormous problem in our economy. "Abuse of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs is costly to our Nation, exacting more than $740 billion annually in costs related to crime, lost work productivity and health care." (Abuse. 2017)
