Description

6 September 2018 Maori 103. Indigenous Studies Dr Nalani Wilson-Hokowitu. The presentation was started with talking about Kaanaka Maoil and linking to the readings. Mauna a Waakea. It’s a contemporary vessel for navigating the oceans. Why is it important that The Faculty of Maori and Indigenous Studies stays as a Faculty. Well originally indigenous peoples were studied and categorized and with the cultural revitalization, indigenous people wanted to reclaim our culture, our knowledge, our rights to name ourselves and produce our own research within academic institutions. Te Uruwera was named as a living breathing entity and just think if all our mountains, rivers and oceans were acknowledged as living breathing entities, then we have the power to change our environment, our world. The question posed was….What do you stand for?? When listening to the poems and music in the lecture and look at the images and consider how you feel? what thoughts come to you? and what do you stand for? You might like to journal these thoughts. Hokolea’a - Joyful star, a bright light in dream and how this was the name for the canoe. Voyaging started to bring islands, culture, history knowledge together and this is a form of resistance. Resistance against exploitation of resources, sailing for peace. Protest at Mauna a Waakea…. The issue around Mauna a Waakea was the permission given to build 30 metre telescope, 18 stories high on the top of Mauna a Waakea. Mauna Kea…. Protesting can be seen as dangerous, violent and troublemakers. But we are protectors, protectors of culture, land, language. The poem we heard from Brian Kuada reconfigures the perspective of protest. saying we are protectors, we are here to stay, we are brave.
