Jake Spear Mr. Gabriel Alaniz IT-200 18 October 2020 7-2 Project Two: The IT Professional IT Disciplines 

Computer Science: Computer science is the study of algorithmic processes and computational machines. As a discipline, computer science spans a range of topics from theoretical studies of algorithms, computation and information to the practical issues of implementing computing systems in hardware and software. Computer science addresses any computational problems, especially information processes, such as control, communication, perception, learning, and intelligence. o Roles & Careers: Data Scientists, Software Tester, Full-stack Developer. o Tools used: REPL, CodePen, Gist.

Engineering: Computer engineering is a branch of engineering that integrates several fields of computer science and electronic engineering required to develop computer hardware and software. Computer engineers usually have training in electronic engineering (or electrical engineering), software design, and hardware-software integration instead of only software engineering or electronic engineering. Computer engineers are involved in many hardware and software aspects of computing, from the

design of individual microcontrollers, microprocessors, personal computers, and supercomputers, to circuit design. This field of engineering not only focuses on how computer systems themselves work but also how they integrate into the larger picture. o Roles & Careers: Hardware Engineer, Network Engineer, Database Administrator. o Tools used: Fume extractor, Microscope, Multimeter.

Information Systems: Information Systems is an academic study of systems with a specific reference to information and the complementary networks of hardware and software that people and organizations use to collect, filter, process, create and also distribute data. An emphasis is placed on an information system having a definitive boundary, users, processors, storage, inputs, outputs and the aforementioned communication networks. Any specific information system aims to support operations, management and decision-making. An information system is the information and communication technology (ICT) that an organization uses, and also the way in which people interact with this technology in support of business processes. o Roles & Careers: Systems Analyst, Information Systems Manager, Software Support. o Tools used: MS Office, DBAN, Sysinternals Suite.

Information Technology: Information technology (IT) is the use of computers to store, retrieve, transmit, and manipulate data or information. IT is typically used within the

context of business operations as opposed to personal or entertainment technologies. IT is considered to be a subset of information and communications technology (ICT). An information technology system (IT system) is generally an information system, a communications system or, more specifically speaking, a computer system – including all hardware, software and peripheral equipment – operated by a limited group of users. o Roles & Careers: Information Technology Consultant, Information Technology Business Analyst, Information Security Analyst. o Tools used: VOIP Phone Service, MS Office, Screen Sharing program.

Programming and Scripting 

Programming: Computer programming is the process of designing and building an executable computer program to accomplish a specific computing result or to perform a specific task. Programming involves tasks such as: analysis, generating algorithms, profiling algorithms' accuracy and resource consumption, and the implementation of algorithms in a chosen programming language (commonly referred to as coding). The source code of a program is written in one or more languages that are intelligible to programmers, rather than machine code, which is directly executed by the central processing unit. The purpose of programming is to find a sequence of instructions that will automate the performance of a task (which can be as complex as an operating system) on a computer, often for solving a given problem. Proficient programming thus often requires expertise in several different subjects, including knowledge of the application domain, specialized algorithms, and formal logic.

Spear 4

Scripting: A computer script is a list of commands that are executed by a certain program or scripting engine. Scripts may be used to automate processes on a local computer or to generate Web pages on the Web. For example, DOS scripts and VB Scripts may be used to run processes on Windows machines, while AppleScript scripts can automate tasks on Macintosh computers. ASP, JSP, and PHP scripts are often run on Web servers to generate dynamic Web page content.

There are a few things that distinguish a script from a program. A program is compiled, whereas a script is interpreted. A program creates binaries or executables from the system’s memory while a script does not and does not use any system memory. Programs run independently whereas scripts run inside another program. An IT professional would use scripting in their work to automate tasks such as file removal, copying and management. An IT professional would use programming in their work to test program functionality, write a specific program for a user or update/modify designs given by software developers and engineers. Careers of Interest 

Entry Level: IT Technician (Computer Science/IT/Engineering) o Roles & Responsibilities: Install/configure hardware components, repair or replace damaged or faulty hardware, upgrade systems. o Tools used: Spiceworks, Portable cable tester, RMM (Remote Management and Monitoring) application. o Training & Certifications: CompTIA A+, CCNA, Associate’s in IT.

Spear 5

Mid-Level: Junior Network Architect (Computer Science/IT/Engineering) o Roles & Responsibilities: Collaborate with Network Architects to optimize network, work with backbone Engineer to deploy network solutions, scheduling network upgrades. o Tools used: Spiceworks, Pulseway, Portable Cable Tester, RMM (Remote Management and Monitoring) application, LucidChart. o Training & Certifications: CCNA, CompTIA A+, Network+, Security Plus, Bachelor’s in CS/IT.

Goal: Senior Network Architect (Computer Science/Engineering) o Roles & Responsibilities: Network design and modeling (create blueprints for network topology), oversee creation and optimization of computer systems and technologies. o Tools used: Spiceworks, Pulseway, Portable Cable Tester, RMM (Remote Management and Monitoring) application, LucidChart. o Training & Certifications: CCNA, CompTIA A+, Network+, Security Plus, Bachelor’s or Master’s in CS/IT.
