PSY 211 Project Two Template

Use this template to complete your life-span theory exploration paper. Answer each question with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information.

1. Identify a theorist, summarize their theory, and explain the aspects of that theory that relate to the biological perspective.

Erik Erikson’s theory maintained that personality develops in eight stages of psychosocial development and this is from infancy to adulthood. Through these stages the individual will experience different crisis that could have an impact, either negative or positive, on their personality development. While Erikson’s theory is more of a way to look at things from a more descriptive standpoint of human social and emotional development that does not always explains why or how this development will occur. The theory of Erikson goes along way to tie together the important psychological development that covers the entire lifespan. (McLeod, 2018)

2. Provide an example of how this biological perspective of life-span development applies to your lived experience. In looking at my own lived experiences I look at my own childhood and how my own life experiences have molded who I am today. I was always told by everyone that those who are abused or who suffer psychological will repeat the cycle when they get

older. I used to always argue that this was not always the case and that anyone can change the cycle and be their own person and decide how they want to live their own life.

3. Identify a theorist, summarize their theory, and explain the aspects of that theory that relate to the psychological perspective. In looking at a theorist I would look at Mary Ainsworth and her attachment theory. The attachment theory depends on the interaction between the mother and the infant. How we develop attachment in our early life will be determined on how we interact, cope and attach with people as we progress through our life. The research that Ainsworth performed shows that the attachment psychology of people begins with the attachment psychology in early life and the child’s exposure to that attachment that is given by their caregiver. (McLeod, 2018)

4. Provide an example of how this psychological perspective of life-span development applies to your lived experience. Attachment had a big impact on my early childhood. By the time I was four my mom had abandoned my brother I and was unattached to anyone. My early childhood was full of turmoil and distrust and I was at a point where I could not trust anyone. This was the case when it came to females. My mother caused me not to trust any women and I refused to attach myself to anyone because of this distrust. It took my stepmom a lot of time and patience to reach my heart and to show me that I could trust someone and to attach myself to another female. However, the results of my childhood still plays a part in my trust of others, and I still have a hard time trust women and some men,

5. Identify a theorist, summarize their theory, and explain the aspects of that theory that relate to the social perspective. I enjoy the Sociocultural theory of Leo Vygotsky. Through his theory it states that children’s development is a socially mediated process. This relates to the child’s belief system and value and shows that their problem-solving is a collaborated process that involves the whole community and members of their society. Member of a society could mean a religious organization or even a school one. Its interesting to see that Vygotsky placed his emphasis on how culture affects cognitive development. (McLeod, 2018)

6. Provide an example of how this social perspective of life-span development applies to your lived experience. The example I can think of right now is children that are raised in a religious household. These are societies that follow strict guidelines and rules and its these guidelines that govern their values and belief systems. I was never a religious person, but now I am and I follow what the bible says in how we are to live and I pass that teaching on to my own family.

7. Describe why analyzing the life span from a combined biological, psychological, and social perspective is important. When addressing the person there are many aspects that needs to be factored in when looking at a person’s development. All aspects need to be addressed and it is important to look at the whole individual as you think about how to analyze an

3

individual. Every person is different and know one is truly the same and everyone will react differently to any given situation. When looking at my biological mother abandoning my brother and I we were affected in many ways that affected who we would become as a person. While my brother was too young to remember her, I was old enough to develop that emotional detachment that I developed and the hatred that I held for her for many years. This one event had a lot of underling problems that I am still working on facing even today.
