Clair 1 Ian Clair Dr. Heather Heinrich PSY-108: Introduction to Psychology 9/25/2020 Project One: Nature Vs. Nurture The debate of nature versus nurture is a debate that is as old as time itself, many psychologists have weighed in on this topic. The debate revolves around the idea that a person’s strengths and weaknesses are based on their genetic make-up or the environments the person is brought up in. This debate has had major social effects, especially when considering ways to establish a person’s ability to learn or how to assess a person’s intelligence. This makes the debate of nature versus nurture a hot topic in Psychology. My argument is that nurture makes more of an impact on a person’s behaviors than nature. When looking at nurture up against the seven perspectives of psychology, the socialcultural perspective helps develop a person’s personality, learning skills and helps determine how intelligence will affect them. The behavioral perspective will help show an individual differences in temperament, like if a person grows up in a violent home, they would be more prone to be angrier and lash out more. Adversely, if a person grows up in a loving home, they may be happier and be more prone to be nicer to people around them. The social-cultural perspective could help us understand how a like if a person grows up in a violent home, they would be more prone to be angrier and lash out more. Adversely, if a person grows up in a loving home, they may be happier and be more prone to be nicer to people around them. “John Locke believed in what is referred to “tabula rasa” which suggests that the mind starts a blank slate. (Cherry, 2020)” This means through the social-cultural perspective a person’s life experiences and environment could help mold person’s personality. While genetics creates the biological factors of a person such as hair, skin, and eye color, the person’s environment

Last Name 2 helps creates their temperaments and tendencies through observation. An example of this could be a child might learn through observation and reinforcement to say 'please' and 'thank you’ or a child may learn to behave violently by observing older kids acting aggressive on the playground. These things that could be influenced by a person’s environment and could relate to experiences in their life. Sigmund Freud said that events in our youth have a great influence on our adult lives, determining our individuality. He thought that parenting is a major significance to a child's growth, and the family as the most valuable feature of nurture was a popular theme all through twentieth-century psychology. Behaviorism, established by John Watson, is the theory that all behavior is a result of stimulation from the environment or a consequence of the individual’s previous conditioning.[3] Behaviorism is a school of psychology that supports nurture. It is how you are raised or “nurtured” that regulates the psychologically important parts of child growth and the concept of maturation relates only to the biological. The environment and experiences either positive or negative helps create a person’s personality. So, in conclusion, I feel in the debate of nature vs. nurture, a person’s behavior is more influenced by nurture. Their experiences and the environment they interact in help shape the person they become later in life. The behavior perspective and social-cultural perspective work hand and hand together.
