PSY 211 Project One Template Use this template to complete your case study analysis. Answer each question with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. 1. Describe the ways in which Piaget’s research applies to Jamie’s development. Piaget believed that children build understandings of society through experience, which are then adjusted as they discover more about the world around them. This theory could apply to Jamie’s development because of her experience at home and as a result, caused her to act out violence to various non-violent situations. When Jamie has inappropriate responses to negative situations, then this could explain her behavior. In Jamie's environment, anger is an appropriate method of coping through feelings. 2. Describe the ways in which Vygotsky’s research applies to Jamie’s development. Vygotsky's sociocultural theory proposes that children learn and develop simultaneously through social interactions rather than developing first and learning later. Jamie's development was impacted by grown up in a one-parent household with financial hardships and that one parent's struggles with addiction. As a young girl, she watched and absorbed her mother's approach life choices and stress management. She relied on her mother, Judi, in many situations, who is not in the best emotional and psychological health. So, Jamie hasn't learned how to deal with social situations and stress in a constructive way, so she reacts to them in an angry and uncontrollable manner. 3. Identify factors that could have influenced Jamie’s physical well-being during the prenatal, birth, and early childhood stages of development. The lack of parental care Jamie received in her early stages of growth could have affected her physical well-being. Some evidence suggests that Jamie was mistreated and neglected. Her mother also made choices that also had a negative impact on Jamie's life. Because of this, Jamie would clearly have a less than stellar childhood and develop social and behavioral issues. While there is no indication that Judi drank while pregnant, Jamie’s social and behavioral issues could be pointed Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). 4. Identify factors that could have influenced Jamie’s cognitive well-being during the prenatal, birth, and early childhood stages of development. As I already mentioned, there is the possibility that Jamie could suffer from FAS. Her mother's consumption of alcohol during pregnancy might have affected her during her pregnancy with Jamie, during her infant years, and even early childhood experiences. Even if alcohol exposure does not result in fetal alcohol syndrome, infants are at higher risk for neurodevelopmental disorders associated with alcohol consumption. Behavioral and physical problems caused by these disorders can negatively impact the cognitive development of children. Situations such as Jamie's attention-deficit issues or her temper getting the best of her is are likely to be the results of her mother's drinking while pregnant. 5. Identify factors that could have influenced Jamie’s psychosocial well-being during the early and middle childhood stages of development. Children rely on and trust in their parents/guardians to take care of them. In more cases than there should be, the opposite takes place, and it is of course the child that suffers. Jamie was not 1

only neglected during her childhood, but she was not able to trust Judi as her sole parent during the early and middle childhood years of her development. She had several sessions with her school psychologist because she felt lost, abandoned, and rejected. A lack of trust caused her to feel isolated and moody, and caused her to have emotional outbursts. The fact that Judi has given Jamie plenty of reasons to mistrust her means Jamie could develop trust issues which would have a negative impact on future relationships. 6. Evaluate the sociocultural factors that could contribute to Jamie’s maladaptive behavior. The upbringing of Jamie and lack of communication in the home are among the sociocultural factors that would explain Jamie's inability to socialize like most. This would explain her difficulty making friends. When Jamie became embarrassed or confused, she then turned to aggression. Her social skills were likely learned from her mother or the household she grew up in. 7. Explain why it is important to consider the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial factors in combination (versus separately) throughout the life span when evaluating an individual’s wellbeing. It is necessary to evaluate an individual's well-being in terms of physical, cognitive, and psychosocial factors, since said factors enable us to observe the individual's growth or even their decline. An understanding of how those factors relate to the individual can enable us to better treat or diagnose them. Each one of these factors plays a role in the development of an individual. The roots of many psychological problems such as anger issues or drinking usually stem from childhood trauma. Prime examples being Judi and Jamie. 8. Describe the research or theory that best explains Jamie’s behavior. Explain your response. I would say that Albert Bandura’s social learning theory would be the best explanation of Jamie's behavior. Bandura believed "most human behavior is learned through observation, imitation, and modeling" (Kurt, 2020). Since she was a child, she has most certainly seen her mother struggle with managing her own emotions and her lack of emotional intelligence. Her mother may have also isolated herself from social situations which explains Jamie's tendency to isolate. Even though not on purpose, it would make sense that Jamie's behavior would be largely inherited from her mother considering Judi was her sole caretaker.
