Description

1.Pick any two of the Enterprise Architecture definitions and compare them. Identify areas of similarities and areas of difference. Zachman vs TOGAF Framework In this report I will define both the Zachman and TOGAF framework, as well as compare both the advantages and disadvantages between the two as they relate to enterprises today. Zachman Framework Definition (ZAF) In 1987, the Zachman Framework for Enterprise Architecture was published by John Zachman and is considered to be the original framework which all other frameworks were later developed from. According to Zachman, the framework is an ontology and a structured set of essential components of an object for which explicit expressions is necessary for creating, operating and changing the object. The framework provides six increasingly detailed views or levels of abstractions from six different perspectives. The six scopes are the contextual, conceptual, logical, physical, as built and functioning enterprise. The columns of the framework represent the deliverables of each row; who, what, where, when and why, which in turn make up the 36 necessary categories for describing anything. The Open Group Architectural Framework (TOGAF) The Open Group Architectural Framework, more frequently referred to as TOGAF, was first developed in 1995. The TOGAF framework was initially based on the department of defense architectural framework or DoDAF. The framework helps businesses develop, manage and evolve their enterprise architectures allowing them to be robust, flexible and efficient in order to create change in organizations. TOGAF teaches this through the architecture development method (ADM) which is the focal point of TOGAF. ADM can be broken down into several major phases after determining the capabilities and existing framework of an organization, such as architecture vision, business architecture, information systems architecture, technology architecture, opportunities/solutions, migration planning, governance and change management. The architecture development method provides a set of architecture principles for each of the different phases. Zachman Framework vs The Open Group Architectural Framework Comparison When comparing frameworks, we must understand the true objective trying to be achieved by each one. Several frameworks in enterprise architecture have very limited scope and are applicable to smaller projects/departments whereas other frameworks are enterprise focused and look to support a much larger project. The reason I’ve chosen to compare the Zachman framework to TOGAF is because Zachman was the original framework and TOGAF is the most globally accepted practice today, I would like to know what developments have been made in framework practices over time and which is more successful. I will be comparing the two frameworks based on the benefits vs downsides of each, as well as the perspectives of each user. The chart below compares the outcome or responsibility of each role, we can determine the Zachman framework is the most comprehensive, involving various stakeholders’ opinions to achieve a well-designed product. The TOGAF framework is much simpler, various stakeholder are involved in the planning phase and the needs are then passed on to the architecture team to design and build. It is clear to me based on the comparison that the Zachman framework should be used for much larger enterprise projects as it covers several levels of needs and minimizes the risk of something being overlooked. The TOGAF framework is much better for smaller or department focused projects as it reduces the number of opposing opinions but rather creates a framework of best practices which the architecture team can then 1

execute. The second chart below compares the pros vs cons of each framework which can help determine which framework should be used.

Pros vs Cons Pros

Cons

     

Zachman Utilizes a wide variety of tools/skills Moves project along quickly Great approach to produce each stakeholder architectural need Works well cross functionally Promotes a top-down approach Not well accepted today Not flexible / Practical Risk of conflict Lacks best practices

       

TOGAF Well known and credible Flexible Framework of common practices contributed by a large community Structure and guidance Practical Does not work well cross functionally Parts outside of ADM are not well accepted Project moves slower

2. Using any number of the definitions, create your own definition of Enterprise Architecture as it would apply for Ryerson University. Enterprise architecture as it would apply to Ryerson can be defined as the process of enhancing a student’s education by supporting the learnings of each class with effective physical and virtual resources such as tutorials, readings, forums and email support in order to create processes and best practices for the student/user to retain information and achieve a good mark.

3. Read through the document above especially the section on “Developing an organization chart” p7. Use the same concept, create the organization flow for the columns of Zachman and another diagram for rows.
