HIS-100: 8.3 Discussion: Revisiting History: 1. Revisit learning block 1-2 to consider your previous thoughts on the study of history and reflect on how your thinking on history has evolved. Finally, respond to the following question: Now that you are coming to the end of this course, has your perception of history evolved since module one? Why or why not? 2. Niccolò Machiavelli once stated, "Wise men say, and not without reason, that whoever wishes to foresee the future must consult the past; for human events ever resemble those of preceding times." With this quote in mind and reflecting on your research this term consider this question: Choose a contemporary issue and describe how your perception of that issue could have changed based on your research of your topic? In response to peers, explain whether or not you share your peer's perception of the selected contemporary issue. Why or why not? Upon reflecting on the duration of the course, I stand by my conclusion that history does not repeat itself. History is used to teach people today about what happened in the past so we can better navigate life, not repeat past mistakes, and learn from choices made years ago that laid the foundation of where we are today. It still is not my favorite subject, though I do see its importance. I do believe that people who do not like subjects have to work twice as hard to complete the work and learn it when it is required. And those people will not seek out information about subjects they dislike unless there is a strong reason to do so, such as taking a class, having a task at work, etc. My topic was the Drafting of the U.S. Constitution and the quote from Niccolò Machiavelli relates in the sense that in order to see past mistakes, why old laws failed, we have to examine history and why the laws were enacted then changed in the first place. My research on my topic proved just that. By examining the areas in which the Articles of Confederation failed, were too weak, or the loopholes/gaps in the law, people were able to come up with better policies/laws moving forward that were stronger and helped to avoid the same mistakes. Had people not examined the faults, they absolutely would have continued to make mistakes and we would not have a strong government system that we have today....
