Introduction: 78 words Innovation and social innovation are important business ideas that steer economical growth for economic sustainability. Through the compliance of environmentally social practices as well as the act to satisfy the needs of contemporary social issues – i.e., poverty, etc. – sustainability will be achieved, which will benefit the environment and economic landscape for present circumstances as well as for future generations. Words with Heart is an organisation that will be studied of which excels at the practice of this aspect. Part A: Define the concepts of ‘innovation’, and ‘social innovation’ and discuss why socially and environmentally responsible innovation is important for sustainable performance of businesses. 264 words  In one sentence state why innovation and social innovation are important for economic sustainability  Define innovation (may give example)  Define social innovation (may give example)  Touch back on the importance of innovation for social and environmental responsibility  Evaluate (may be optional) "An innovation is the implementation of a new or significantly improved product (good or service), or process, a new marketing method, or a new organisational method in business practices, workplace organisation or external relations". (OECD Oslo Manual, 3rd edition)

Social innovation is a novel solution to a social problem that is more effective, efficient, sustainable, or just than existing solutions and for which the value created accrues primarily to society as a whole rather than private individuals” (Phills, Deiglmeier and Miller 2008: 36).

Economic sustainability is the act to ensure the preservation of resources – human and material – to sustain long-term usage for future generations, this can be achieved through successful ventures of innovation and/or social innovation (HIG.SE). Fundamentally, innovation is an action, one of which ventures for new or improved goods and/or services, however, not exclusive to tangible/intangible operations but relevant likewise for organisational design aimed for improved business operations (OECD oslo manual). For example, the innovative venture of Tesla who forgone petrol powered vehicles for electric vehicles for the environmental sustainability towards a zero-emission future, while accommodating the needs of vehicle enthusiasts promising for an improved experience (TESLA website). Furthermore, social innovation is an action that aims to tackle a social problem that focuses further on effective, efficient, sustainable and/or improved results within a societal scale (PHILLS). The AstraZeneca vaccine for COVID-19 can be made exemplar of a social innovation. Deemed as a safe solution for the unrelenting social issue, that is COVID-19, which halted international operations of the economy and human interaction (NYTIMES), a solution aimed to remedy this has the viability to be considered as a social innovation. Thus, under innovation and social innovation, socially and environmentally responsible innovation is important for sustainable performance of businesses. This is because, the implications of such actions provide a mass of benefits, those of which factor towards long-term business success and social and environmental longevity. Factoring a hypothetical circumstance, a more social and environmentally responsible business will receive further social popularity leading to business growth and participate in the contribution for economic sustainability for future business operations. Part B: Critically analyse an enterprise that has attempted to address a social or environmental issue. You may select a business enterprise which has developed an innovative solution for a social/environmental issue or a non-for-profit organisation that has developed an innovative product or service. Discuss what aspects of the case example allow it to be identified as innovative as well as being socially or environmentally responsible. 348 words  State what are social or environmental issues (more on what “words with heart” is focusing on)  Introduce “words with heart”: what they do, what they try to achieve in terms of innovative solution for a social/environmental issue) (provide education for women and girls, in Africa and asia. Utilise sustainable materials)  Describe the aspects which makes “words with heart” innovative as well as being socially or environmentally responsible. Social and environmental issues are international and economical priorities in order to ensure a longterm and sustainable future able to preserve our environment for the benefit of future generations and present living conditions. Such issues encompass contemporary concerns such as the need for universal education and the ability to recycle environmental resources to reduce waste capacity and sustain environmental circumstances. “Words with Heart” is a known social enterprise that tackles these two social and environmental issues (WORDSWITHHEART). The former, universal education is tackled by words with heart to remedy the issue concerning the limitation on the ability to provide

education for women, with further particular focus in third world countries. According to the about us section of the organisation, words with heart has partnered with NGOs in funding education projects across Africa and Asia for women and girls (WORDSWITHHEART). The latter, environmental sustainability, words with heart addresses this by manufacturing their products through 100% recycled materials with eco friend electricity, as the organisation has a focused emphasis on sustainability (WORDSWITHHEART). These can be achieved through the innovative action words with heart follows. The social enterprise promotes the sale of stationary materials focused on business, wedding, and personal uses. The aspect which separates words with heart to other organisation of the same kind is through their clean finish on their products providing aesthetic features that caters towards modern social interests of young women (WORDSWITHHEARTSHOP). Words with heart is a social enterprise that can be regarded as innovative as well as being socially and/or environmentally responsible through their business operations. The social enterprise innovates through its unique designs and distribution of their stationary products catering to a particular demographic – i.e., a young audience of women –, socially through its funding of education for women and girls in third world countries and environmentally responsible through the logistics of materials utilised, sourcing 100% recycled paper and use of eco friendly electricity. In evaluation, words with heart is a socially and environmentally responsible innovative social enterprise that aims to tackle contemporary issues within our society for the guarantee of economic and environmental sustainability.

Part C: Evaluate the selected case example on the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of performance and identify potential challenges for sustainable performance. Make recommendations for improvements in responsible innovation approaches. Develop an argument on how social/environmental innovation can be embedded in the strategy and potential challenges faced by businesses in such endeavours. 348 words  Evaluate the action made by “words with heart” on social, economic, and environmental dimensions of performance.  Identify potential challenges for sustainable performance.  Recommend for improvements in responsible innovation approaches.  Develop an argument on how social/environmental innovation can be embedded in the strategy and potential challenges faced by businesses in such endeavours. The innovative ventures of words with heart is a distinguished example of social, economic and environmental practice. Coupling the combined efforts of the social enterprise in cooperation for the education of women and girls, particularly within third world countries and its practice of sustainability through recycling of materials, it is reasonable to believe the social, economic, and environmental performance of Words with Heart distinctive from competitors. Comparing Words with Heart’s operations to competitors, “buy eco green” is a comparable social enterprise that utilises an ecofriendly manufacturing process striving for sustainability (BUYECOGREEN). The aspect which separates the two-social enterprise with which Words with Heart excels over is through its further mission to aim for future sustainability, through the funding and assistance of education for women in third world countries. However, potential challenges words with heart may confront for such sustainable performances are a potential loss in profits due to the sum of profits donated for education purposes (WORDSWITHHEART), an increase of costs due to the continuous reliance on 100% recyclable materials, either through processing into a manufacturable state and removal of unmanufacturable waste, and loss of potential sales through limited product options (WORDSWITHHEARTSHOP). Therefore, recommendations that can be made to improve these innovative approaches are imperative to remedy the challenges. The main challenges can be

remedied through an increase of profits and this can be made by identifying a reliable logistics line of recyclable materials to cut time and costs, and potential expansion in its product line to cater for further consumer attraction and sales. Social/environmental innovation can be embedded through this strategy identifying a reliable source of materials for environmental purposes, and further promote the assistance the social enterprise makes towards women and education for further public endorsement by exploring social media outlets. Potential challenges that can be identified through these ventures are time for the strategy to be implemented in operations and ability for the organisation to maintain a sustained business operation. There will be a stage of negative profits due to the investment being a long-term recommendation, however, if overcome, will excel the organisation to success. Conclusion: 62 words (can be improved) In conclusion, the current actions of Words with Heart strive for a noble cause directed for a sustainable future. Although, a successful venture, there are many factors with which the social enterprise can improve upon, such as the efficiency of gathering the recycled materials, for the benefit of the environment and costs reduction as well as the future sustainability of the organisation.
