Case Study #1

1. What personality (or character) type does Hank display according to Freudian theory? Provide evidence for your answer. At what stage is Hank fixated, according to the Freudian perspective? Find evidence of fixation in the case study. What might have caused this fixation? Hank shows an Oral Aggressive personality. Because manipulation, suspiciousness, and also envy are shown in Hank’s traits. Also, Hank fixated at the oral stage because of his habit of eating and smoking whenever he is stressed. Because of the result of his mother’s love and care, that was used to get fulfilled whenever he needs it before, it resulted as an habit to be satisfied for his mother couldn’t give it to him later on in life.

2. Would Freudian Theory describe Hank’s eating and argumentative behavior as being internally or externally motivated? Explain the motivation. I think it will describe as internally motivated. Because of his habit of eating and smoking as a sign of Oral Fixation whenever he is stress.

3. Find an example of a Freudian defense mechanism that Hank uses in this case. Explain it. Rationalization is a defense mechanism in which controversial behaviors or feelings are being justified and explained in a seemingly rational or logical manner to avoid the true meaning, and are made as consciously tolerable. In which in Hank’s case, is being showed. When Sally left Hank, he thought that he broke up with him because of his weight. Thus, he only thought about the other reason and real issue where he might be the reason behind it and put all the blame on Sally’s shallowness.

4. Find an example of regression in the case study. Explain it. Hank ate an ice cream and followed by smoking to helm him reduce his stress when he thought about what happened to him last week. To put it in other words, Hank instantly regressed to his Oral Stage wherein he sought instant gratification by eating and smoking.

5. Would a Freudian Therapist view Hank’s weight problem as a behavioral roblem,, in and of itself, or a symptom of another problem? Explain.

I think the cause of Hank’s weight problem is cause by him, regressing into Oral Fixation where he excessively eats and smoke to cope up with his stress. And Freudian Therapist can see this as another sign of behavioral problem.

6. What therapeutic techniques would a Freudian Therapist, like the one in the case study, likely use? What state of consciousness would be focus of the therapy? How does healing or improvement occur during Freudian Therapy? I think it would be Free Association. Because in this therapeutic technique, Hank’s thought wouldn’t be censored and also, his unconsciousness focused and may lead to Hank’s improvement about his perception of his own weaknesses and feelings. Thus, making him heal throughout the session as he develops his unconscious thoughts conscious and allows all the repressed emotions be brought and be resolved....
