Description

A very short story by Ernest Hemingway “A very short story” takes place in a small town in Italy called Padua. A world war soldier and a nurse named luz fall in love, because one of the war soldiers is injured and has to be at the hospital for three months. He and Luz wanted to get married, but the soldier had to return back to America. Luz made love to the major of the battalion, and wrote to the soldier that this was a boy and girl affair. She was sorry, and loved the soldier as always. The Major did not marry her, Luz did not get an answer to the last letter. Their love faded. This imagery love story consists of the themes, love and war. The story is written from different points of views which I will come back to later in the essay.

I will suggest that the story has different points of views by the two main characters on the theme love and war. Through close reading I will find interesting words, and points of views in this romantic story.

Early in the story the theme of love and war is present. The love story about Luz and the main character starts on a hot evening in Padua, Italy. The small town Hemingway chose, I think, makes this love story more romantic. A small town in Italy where people who were not supposed to meet, actually met. Luz is a nurse in Italy who takes care of injured soldiers, and one of the soldiers that became injured is the character “he”. He was taking the temperature on the patients, so that Luz could sleep which was consistent with their state of love. That their love life and the war can change in a heartthrob, just like the temperature.

The text gives the reader small hints hidden in the text on pints of views. “A very short story” is narrated in the third person. The third person is anonymous, but has an overview on the characters. It looks like the narrator adopts the point of view of the American, and sees the event from the Soldiers eyes. The soldier actually was Hemmingway, so this has a natural explanation. “After he got on crutches he used to take the temperatures so Luz would not have to get up from the bed”. Afterwards it seems like he is changing the perspective and is focusing on Luz. “She had never known Italians before”. This could be where Hemmingway or the narrator understands Luz or knows her. Like the narrator knows her that well, and her past.

In this essay I have shown words and descriptions on the themes love and war. In addition, I have shown which point of view the writer has chosen to use in the text....
