Assessment Task A1

Team Group 4 Design Innov. Fundamentals

1 CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT REPORT Preface Our team has been continually striving to develop a product concept in the field of pet care which effectively targets a market opportunity whilst considering all stakeholders. A multitude of ideas were refined into one product concept which, we feel, has the most potential. 1.1

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT APPROACH

Numerous methodologies were implemented when considering and contrasting ideas in the refinement process. Those methods included; brainstorming, divergent and convergent thinking, and the Disney approach to idea refinement. At the commencement of the design process, the team engaged in a period of un-inhibited brainstorming, where all ideas were recorded in moderate detail until each member of the group had produced 2 feasible, innovative, design concepts. This process adhered to the divergent thinking process closely. This process took almost two full hours as all team members required decent time allocation to hypothesize with in their own respective experiences and fields. Of the 8 concepts that were created in this session, 4 were selected for further processing where each of which ideas were subjected to the Dreamer, realist, and critic phase of processing. Through this process, we could identify both, beneficial, and detrimental aspects of all products. The continual input of all members of the team allowed for, what we believe to be, the most effective and content rich brainstorming possible. Products theorized: Pet camping tent, quadrupedal mobility aid, multi-purpose pet raincoat, brush/grooming gloves, Desktop auto feeder, Compact pet care kit, GPS pet tracking collar and the ultrasonic pet protector. 1.2

CONCEPT

SELECTION

APPROACH The 4 short-listed ideas were subjected to the SCAMPER technique as well as a screening matrix to further refine the ideas. Our final selections included that of the; Quadrupedal mobility aid, the Pet camping tent, the Desktop auto feeder, and the GPS tracking collar. The result of both processes deemed the Pet Camping Tent concept, the most likely to succeed. The Pet Camping Tent concept was selected due to a few main desirable characteristics. Firstly, the concept is affordable to manufacture with a high profit margin forecast. Secondly, the product targets a sector of the market which is likely to spend the required money for the benefits of the product. Thirdly, the products compact nature makes it very appealing to those who desire a streamlined and user oriented product experience.

Our team discovered that through the process of refining our potential product ideas, we could conceive new concepts more readily, as well as morph existing concepts to be more innovative; to solve more issues simultaneously.

2 PRODUCT CONCEPT ASSESSMENT 2.1 USE

FEATURES AND EXPECTED

The Pet Camping Tent concept is a miniature tent which can house pets and all the equipment necessary to take care of them. The tent itself is self-supported but can be mated to a larger tent with the included Velcro patches. The tent provides all the comforts of an enclosure, whilst separating the pet from its owners for periods limited only to their will. The system rolls up and is stored in a hard ABS plastic tubular case which has compartments on both ends for both pet food, and grooming/care needs. Some of the expected use cases for this product include, the use of the product to protect pets from potentially destructive weather, the use of the product to isolate a pet from the internal occupants of the main tent in order that the odor in the occupant’s tent remains satisfactory, the use of multiple products to house and protect multiple animals whist simultaneously allowing for the convenient carrying of pet supplies.

2.2 PRICE

TARGET MARKET AND TARGET SELLING

The target market of the Pet Camping Tent will include, but not be limited to, pet owners who wish to bring their pets with them on camping holidays or in the car on long journeys. It will also include those who desire affordable and convenient protection for their pets. The expected price of the Pet Camping Tent is $80 AUD. We believe this will allow for a future (postestablishment) profit margin of 300%-400%.

2.3 REQUIREMENTS   
