The State Emergency Service (SES) is being kept busy with hundreds of calls for assistance as high winds sweep across the state.

The SES has had over 400 calls for help with fallen trees and minor building damage and is continuing to get up to five calls for assistance every minute.

An 18-metre tree has fallen on a childcare centre at Upwey, in Melbourne's outer eastern suburbs. Luckily the centre was closed at the time. The council says the damage is minimal. The Lilydale and Hurstbridge train lines have been suspended due to storm damage to overhead lines.

"Our crews have been busy removing trees and repairing damaged electricity assets and returning electricity to our customers," he said.
