Papers are due on the final day of your last class - not on exam day. Exams: There will be two exams, each worth 250 points. I will try to stick with the midterm exam date indicated below but it is possible that this exam date will shift as much as a week if we move more slowly than planned through the material. Students are responsible for being at the exam if the scheduled date changes. Exams may not be taken early. The exams will be multiple choice and will focus on the material covered in lecture. There will be some questions based on reading material that we do not get a chance to discuss in class. For the most part, however, the questions will be drawn from lecture material. It is not advisable to skip class. In addition to class work assignments being given on random days, approximately 25% of all test material will come from lecture material that is not on the slides from lecture. You also receive points for discussion section, as described below. In other words, it is unlikely that you will be able to receive an “A” by reading the slides and the book outside of class, unless you also attend lecture and take careful notes (and complete all other requirements… see below for details). The course policy for making up a graded exercise missed due to a short-term illness will be consistent with the university policy. If you miss an exam for reasons other than illness, permission from your Dean will be required for you to make up the exam. Research Reports: These must be reviews of empirical journal articles describing results from a scientific study (i.e., not magazines or any secondary news source). You will read a paper, and then write a brief commentary (does not need to be in APA style) that has sections: (1) introducing the study, (2) describing the methodology used to test hypotheses, (3) providing an overview of the main results, (4) describing what the results mean, and (5) your own critical thoughts about strengths/weaknesses of the study. Each paper you write is worth 50 points. The paper reporting the scientific study itself needs to be handed in (sent via .pdf) via Assignments in Sakai with your report. The first research report is due 2/6. The second report is due 3/6. After due dates, they will be accepted with a penalty of 5 points off of the maximum possible score per day (i.e., 24 hours after 11:59pm the day it is due). Course Project: Your project can be either a term paper (15-20 pages, double-spaced, using APA style) or a brief self-produced video (8-10 minutes). Projects need to be on: (1) etiology, maintenance, and empirically supported treatments for a specific mental health problem. Self-produced videos should be both creatively informative and demonstrate a thoughtful and critical appraisal of your topic area. You can complete the course project any time before the final due date of 4/18 (11:59pm). Submit your work via Assignments in Sakai. After the deadline, you will lose 5 points per day each day (24 hours after 11:59pm the due date) until your work is handed in. Discussion Section: You can earn up to 200 points for the discussion section. Points will be based on the TA’s evaluation of your discussion section participation. Your TA will be solely responsible for making this determination and will provide you with feedback about how you are doing mid-way through the semester, or anytime when requested throughout the semester. Additional information on discussion section requirements will be provided by your TA. Participation during discussion section will be evaluated and points assigned at midterm (100 possible points) and end of the semester (100 possible points). Each half of the semester, points will be given based on the following criteria. Points in Discussion Section: Points will be awarded according to the following criteria: 140 or fewer points: You did not attend discussion sections on a regular basis, provided minimal or few contributions to discussion sections, and/or were a negative presence in discussion sections (e.g., did not pay attention, distracted others or minimized the contributions of others) 160-180 points: You attended discussion sections on a regular basis and were attentive and supportive of others, you made some contribution to at least some of the sections 180-200 points: You attended discussion sections on a regular basis and were attentive and supportive of others, and you made multiple useful contributions to most of the sessions Dates 1/9
