Depression in Women – A Consequence of Learned Helplessness and Style of Coping?

Process Questions: 1. Based on your reading, what significant points did you understand from this article? The first line of the reading states that women are subject to depression more often than men, a fact that I am already quite familiar with. This has been supported by what is called as ‘learned helplessness’ in which women are shaped by society to take less action in improving their status and feel competent as a member of society. Another explanation is on how men and women manage episodes of stress and depression distinctively. Women naturally are more ruminative or reflective than men while subjected to depression which is then amplified and yields longer depressive episodes. This natural response of women are said to be caused by the sex-role learning early in childhood in which at the time, it is observed that men are generally active and coping and the role of being more reflective and emotional is left to women. 2. If it applies to you, what learning did you acquire from this article? I agree with the findings that girls’ behavior are much more unlikely to evoke negative reactions and consequences from parents and other authorities, while taking into account learned helplessness. I also learned from the article that gender differences play a crucial role on how men and women cope with depressive episodes. Men are generally expected to actively deal with stress and engage in activities where they can divert their attention to. Meanwhile, women typically are prone to overthinking whenever depressed and do not actively deal with it unlike their male counterparts. Although men and women differ in myriad ways, at the end of the day it does not erase the fact that we will always be subjected to depression. 3. How do you want to regulate your SELF from this point and onwards? I think I would stick to how I have always regulated myself as it is very effective for me. I take time to slow down and step back. I buy myself some time to gather my thoughts, reflect on the situation, and realistically assess what’s going on and what needs to be done. If I feel like I am getting too angry in a stressful situation that involves another person, I usually end the conversation, take some space, and does not resume talking until I am calm. 4. How does this impact you as a woman or man? As a man, I’ve realized that there is more to depression to both sexes than it meets the eye. It is of utmost importance that men must understand how depression affects women, in turn, women must know how depression works on men. What we ought to do is to address depression and together fight it before it can devour countless of people’s lives....
