Description

ACCG3015 - Reflection 2A RSM (Week 3, 10/08/2021 6pm-9pm, Tuesday) Within this reflection, I will be reflecting upon the industry partner that I have selected to work for. The chosen industry partner is RSM which is a global firm that provides tax, audit and consulting services. The work environment as presented by Anthony Smith, is a very professional one that values strong client relationships as the firm structure underscores a client focused culture. Anthony mentions the value they have for the awards they have achieved, which were through clients' votes. This is achieved through effective communication and collaboration of clients and of the team. I recently have been offered a junior accountant role within a small accounting firm that also provides similar services to clients which is why I chose RSM because their work environment and goals would also be similar. The role of an accountant as presented by Anothny, is to provide a positive focus on client service. It has been said repeatedly that communication is something that is essential within the accounting profession as an accountant cannot provide the service without it. Within my interview for the junior accountant position, communication was a must have in order to obtain this position. Learning how RSM's main focus is communication and collaboration to achieve positive client services makes me realise that accounting isn’t just about financial statements and reports etc, but to also really understand the clients. My work experience at Coles helped me to achieve the communication skills and to understand customers needs and wants which will ultimately help me with working with clients in my new role. As a new graduate employed by RSM, it is said by Kian Ghahramani that RSM would not expect much from you, as a new graduate would not have experience within the industry. It is about having the willingness to learn as you go and to have a good attitude. It has also been said by Nicole that the role will require the new graduate to have a strong work ethic and be able to work in a fast paced, team environment. This is very similar to my new junior accountant position as when applying for that role, I did

not have any work experience within accounting, however they told me that they are not looking for people with experience but people with the right attitude. Taken from my previous responses, the skills and attributes I expect RSM team to be looking for includes: -

Communication skills: as stated previously, communication skills are essential and important to be an effective accountant, especially when working with clients is a big part of the job description.

-

Strong work ethic: Having discipline and showing hard work to achieve the company's goals will help you learn effectively and efficiently.

-

Team player: Working well with other team members is crucial to solve big and difficult tasks.

-

Organisational skills: Working with many different clients and dealing with fast paced situations requires organisation to plan things ahead and meet deadlines.

These skills are the same skills required for the junior accountant position that I was recently offered. I was able to gain communication skills at my job at coles and from working in many group activities at University, which I displayed during my interview. I also show strong work ethic and work well as part of a team as my job at coles requires me to work alongside with other team members. My organisational skills however could use a lot more work as I sometimes leave things to the last minute and get certain tasks mixed with others. In order to improve and address my weakness of poor organisation, I shall neatly place tasks within their own folders and layout the level of priority of each task along with their due date. I shall also set reminders to stay on top of things and to finish the next upcoming task. To improve my communication skills, I will need to gain more experience with working with clients. To improve my teamwork skills, I could engage in team sports such as rugby in my spare time or to get to know the people I will be working with better....
