Describe the equipment and method of capture for the following species of animal: Dog: Dogs who are of a friendly nature are easily captured by using a lead looped through its handle. Some dogs can be fearful or anxious even dangerous and uncooperative. In this situation they must only be handled by experienced animal care workers and a catch pole is usually used to capture the animal by looping it around the neck and gently leading it in. Cat: cats which are used to human handling will only require the handler to place one hand under the chest and the other under the rump to lift. If the cat is nervous or unsure of strangers it may require the same technique however a light scruff at the back of the neck to gain control if the animal becomes uncooperative. Can use a towel or cat bag as well depending on the animals reactions to the person trying to capture the animal Horse: Halter is a common restraint with horses with rope attached to it, the rope can be tied with a slip knot. Small bird: Birds’ chests compress easily so in the instance of a small bird it must be captured with a cage like grip of the hand allowing it to breath. A small hand towel or face washer may be used between the handler’s hand and the bird. Some small parrots may attempt to bite once they have been captured. Rabbit: captured by picking them up with one hand under the rump and the other hand under the chest. Once they have been captured the handler must hold them closely to their body to prevent them from kicking. Rabbits will also kick and scratch with force once they are captured if frightened. Rat: grasp it around the shoulders. The handler's thumb can then be placed under the rat's mandible, to prevent bites, and the rat's hindlimbs can be supported with the other hand

Whilst carrying out any handling and restraint in relation to an animal held in confinement, give two (2) considerations for the animals welfare 1. the animals need to be protected from pain, disease and suffering so insuring that the animals is not being harmed when restraining and correct handling methods and that they are free to breath is important so that the animals welfare is not decreased 2. the animals need to a suitable environment when they are being handled and confined to ensure that the animal doesn’t stress in the place they are being kept and they have room to ensure the animals welfare can be maintained throughout the period they are being handled. Ensuring in this area they have access to clean water and food suitable to their dietary needs.
