Task 4 A. I chose Scenario 1 about Anthony for this task. One issue that Anthony is experiencing at home is neglect. This is because his dad is not in the picture and when his mom is not working 13 hour shifts between her two jobs she is drunk and high. Anthony also has five siblings that he shares a one bedroom apartment with, and comes to school with dirty clothes and an odor. He also is not getting food at home and in result has begun to steal from other students. Another issue that Anthony is encountering is the fact that he is starting to misbehave at school. He has begun to kick and hit other students and becomes unengaged in academics easily. B1. I would immediately go to the principal about my concerns and go through the child abuse protocol on how to report the neglect. I would also work with the principal to see what free food programs are available to help not only him but his siblings. That way, they could get breakfast and maybe an extra serving of lunch for free so they are a little more full. I would also work with the guidance counselors to see what we can do to get Anthony some extra clean clothes and find a way for them to talk to his mother in a professional and gentle way about the concerns. For his academics, I would find creative ways to keep him engaged by incorporating his personal interests into the lessons. I would also be cautious of how I redirect him and show him as much love as possible since he may not be getting any at home. B2. Since I am required by law to report any suspected abuse including neglect, I would report it to authorities. Since each state has their own procedure set forth by CAPTA I would follow that order. I would also keep note of any evidence I have of neglect including dates and times of him stealing food, coming in dirty clothes, or smelling bad. Based on laws set by FERPA I would ensure both the student and family’s privacy with their personal information, so any reportings or observations that take place I would ensure that they stay private. B3. I would use my resources and collaborate with others first. I would make sure to include the principal, vice principal, guidance counselors, and social workers. I would have conferences in person, either at home or at the school, with his caregiver if she was able to make it, but offer

a phone conference as well since it was mentioned she worked a lot. During these conferences, I would ensure that the caregiver is aware that this is strictly for Anthony’s success. By incorporating the different departments from the school, this would help build a team aspect as well. Everyone can work together to find solutions to help Anthony. A conference would also be a good time to meet his mother and ensure she is aware of the issues at hand. Since she works so much and is always intoxicated, she might not be aware of how bad things have truly gotten. This could also be a good wakeup call for her. We can also have weekly check ins to make sure everyone is on the same page and stays accountable. B3A. If one strategy is ineffective then it helps to have alternative plans of action. For this scenario I think a phone conference call would be most efficient. Since she works so much a phone call will ensure she is able to talk since she may not have time to meet in person. Forcing an in person meeting may cause the meeting not to happen at all. Also, if it’s over the phone we can have a three way with a principal or counselor as well. During the meeting we can all come up with ideas on how to ensure his success so that way the caregiver has a say in what that would be as well. If she feels like she has a say and support she will be more likely to comply. B4. Administrators, his other teachers, social workers, and guidance counselors are all considered to be additional stakeholders. Everyone must work together to ensure that as a teacher you aren’t alone in the process, but also to also to form a support team to work together. With a wide range of outlets working together it will ensure that any resources of help are utilized, and to come up with all possible solutions. C.
