ACR302 Criminology Research - Trimester 2

WELCOME

Welcome to ACR302 Criminology Research! My name is Dr Clare Farmer and I am the ACR302 Unit Chair. In this unit you will learn about and apply core elements of Criminology Research. The unit builds towards the developm of a full Research Proposal, which will be based upon any crime, criminology or criminal justice research idea of your ch The unit will help to embed a range of skills, such as effective research (ie. locating and identifying appropriate sources critical analysis, ethical awareness, self-reflection, and well-organised, logical writing. In addition, you will develop prac understanding of the benefits of working in groups. As such, ACR302 creates context for many future employment or educational opportunities. All assignments are to be completed and submitted individually, but the unit uses group work to support the creation o own Research Proposal (Assessment Three) and as part of your Online Reflection (Assessment Two). As you progress through the unit, you will work through each of the six Modules, which are supported by the fortnightl seminars (either on-campus or online). You will find all of the Module information under 'Resources' in the CloudDeaki Detailed content is provided as a series of web pages within each Module. Seminar participation is strongly advised, as will be allocated to the assignment tasks during each seminar. Please read this Unit Guide carefully, and make sure that you stay up-to-date with news posts via the CloudDeakin site I hope you all enjoy the unit!

This Unit Guide provides you with the key information about this Unit. For the best chance of success, you should read very carefully and refer to it frequently throughout the trimester. Your Unit site (accessed in DeakinSync) also provides information about your rights and responsibilities - we will assume you have read this before the Unit commences, and expect you to refer to it throughout the trimester.

ABOUT THIS UNIT

This unit examines issues concerning designing criminological research, including research ethics, methodology and dat collection, theoretical approaches to research, reviewing existing literature, presenting research findings and the politic criminological research. The unit explores research methods from a critical perspective, using a combination of evidenc from Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. On successful completion of this unit, students will have acq the skills to conceptualise and operationalise a research topic, and design a research proposal to investigate a range of criminological issues. The unit is also the ‘capstone’ for students completing a Criminology major sequence or Bachelor degree.

Unit development in response to student feedback

Every trimester, we ask students to tell us, through eVALUate, what helped and hindered their learning in each unit. Yo strongly encouraged to provide constructive feedback for this unit when eVALUate opens (you will be emailed a link).

In line with feedback from students and teaching staff in 2018, this Unit has been substantially re-developed for delive 2019. The changes include: a) Increasing the number of Modules from five to six. b) Revising the group-delivered assignment to one submitted individually. c) Building skills to work IN effective groups rather than AS a group. d) Changing the major assignment from a pre-assigned Research Project to a student chosen Research Proposal. e) Expanding the unit scope to cover a greater breadth of content, and wider range of research concepts. This better supports the learning outcomes and positions students to develop a deeper and more applied understanding of Crimin Research. f) The development of a new reflective assessment, to replace aspects of the previous group work. g) The provision of additional content to support Assignment One, the Literature Review.

If you have any concerns about the unit during the trimester please contact the unit teaching team - preferably early in trimester - so we can discuss your concerns, and make adjustments, if appropriate.
