Resource Collection RC-II: Nine Learning Experiences

RC II-1: Science/Sensory Age group: Preschool (3-5 years old) Name of activity: Sink or Float Goals: The goal is for the children to learn about density and buoyancy. Materials: A large bowl, water and items of different weights such as utensils, coins, stones. Teaching strategies: I will set up a large bowl filled with water and allow each child to toss one of these items of different weights into the bowl. While they do this, I will ask what they will predict? Will it sink or float? Age appropriate: This activity is developmentally age appropriate because it is a handson activity that promotes their critical thinking skills about why things sink or float.

RC II-2: Language and Literacy Age group: Preschool (3-5 years old)

Name of activity: Color sort with letter magnets

Goals: The goal is for the children to be able to identify the letters as they sort them according to color.

Materials: Bowls of different colors, Letter magnets,

Teaching strategies: As they sort the letters in their matching colored bowls they will talk about the letters and learn as we play. The children will find some familiar letters which they recognize and may engage in conversation by saying the letter out loud, but some might not know yet and ask, "what is this letter?"

3

Age appropriate: This activity is developmentally age appropriate because it engages them in conversation that will promote their language and vocabulary skills for when they transition from Pre-K to kindergarten. Also, it is a great way to help children learn to recognize the letters of the alphabet. 

RC II-3: Creativity Age group: Preschool (3-5 years old)

Name of activity: Sponge Painting

Goals: The goal is for the children to discover shape recognition while also having fun expressing their creativity.

Materials: Paper, sponges, scissors and washable paint.

Teaching strategies: Cut the sponges into different shapes such as circles, squares, and stars. Place a sheet of paper and some washable paint on the table and invite the preschoolers to pick up a sponge and dip it in the paint. Have each child dip the different shape sponges into the paint; as they do this, talk about the colors and the shapes they are using. Age Appropriate: This is developmentally age appropriate because it enables the kids to learn about their shapes and colors while also expressing their creativity with paint.

RC II-4: Fine Motor (please choose an indoor activity) Age group: Preschool (3-5years old) Name of activity: Playdough Goals: The goal is for the children to strengthen their hand muscles by manipulating the play dough with their hands. Materials: Playdough and a play mat.

4

Teaching strategies: The children will use hand-eye coordination to squish, smash, push, pull, and twist the playdough, the actual act of playing with playdough will build their hands muscles required to be able to manipulate everyday items such as scissors, pencils, zippers, and buttons. Age appropriate: This is developmentally age appropriate because it develops the children’s fine motor skills and helps hand eye coordination. Playdough also comes in various consistencies, some of which require more strength than others to manipulate, making it reasonably easy to meet individual needs. 

RC II-5: Gross Motor (please choose an outdoor activity) Age group: Preschool (3-5 years old) Name of activity: Hop scotch Goals: The goal is for each child to use hand-eye coordination to be able to complete the course and also using their balance because you must hop on a combination of one or two feet. Materials: Chalk Teaching strategies: First, I will draw a simple outline of the hopscotch squares outside then explain to each child that they will get a turn to practice their gross motor skills by hopping on each square. I will ask them to look at the patterns and describe “what they see?” then challenge them to perform the task to see who will be able to make it to the end. Age appropriate: This activity is developmentally age appropriate because it teaches the children that they must use their cognitive, physical and social abilities to be able to complete this activity because it requires critical thinking skills, hopping/balance, and their social skills to engage with their peers.

RC II-6: Self-Concepts Age group: Preschool (3-5 years old) Name of activity: Create a “Me” commercial Goals: The goal is for the children to explain why someone should hire them by describing the good qualities they possess. Materials: Tablet (iPad) Teaching strategies: We will begin by arranging the children into groups of four or five and informing them that they are no longer only students but are now highly successful

adults looking for a job. As a successful adult, I will explain to them that you must obtain a resume that lists their skill set or unique qualities that they have. To complete this, they must each discuss this in a video format lasting about 30-60 seconds each student. Age appropriate: This activity is developmentally age-appropriate because it nurtures healthy concepts in the children. This is critically important in early childhood because developing a positive self-concept at an early age, empowers the child to strive for success. RC II-7: Emotional Skills/Regulation Age group: Preschool (3-5 years old) Name of activity: Set up a calm corner Goals: The goal is for the children to learn how to cope with their emotions and to have a safe place to go to self-regulate their feelings when they feel strong emotions or need a break to calm down to redirect their emotions. Materials: A comfy chair such as a beanbag, stuffed animals, books, a plastic bin that includes items such as squeeze balls, putty and breathing exercises. Teaching strategies: During class, I will explain necessary feeling words such as happy, mad, sad, or scared and how to cope with these feelings or what to do if we catch ourselves feeling those negative emotions. I might suggest breaks or free play so the children can burn out all those negative feelings or offer “the calm corner” for anyone having a hard time so they can have a few minutes of alone time to think about how they feel or to use any of the objects to calm them down. I will also explain to the kids that they are more likely to lead happier and healthier lives when self-regulation skills are strengthened. Age appropriate: This activity is developmentally age-appropriate because it helps them understand the concept of self-regulation because it provides them a safe place where they can sit and cope with their feelings and offers them objects to help calm them down. 

RC II-8: Social Skills Age group: Preschool (3-5 years old) Name of activity: Role Playing Goals: The goal is to use role play in the classroom to improve the social skills of the preschoolers. Materials: Props and Costumes

6

Teaching strategies: First, I will break the students up into small groups and give them a few minutes to practice their role-play activity. I will have each group take turns roleplaying. While they are role-playing, I will tell the students to observe how the other students handle the situations represented and ask them to demonstrate good listening by remaining quiet and attentive. When they are done, I will ask the children to reflect on the social skill that is being role-played. Age appropriate: This is developmentally age-appropriate because I am displaying to the students how to model good behavior and showing them how to have listening ears when someone is talking and how to take turns. This activity also teaches them problemsolving skills and real-life situations. 

RC II-9: Math Age group: Preschool (3-5 years old) Name of activity: Button color sorting cups Goals: The goal is for the children to engage in hands-on practice of key math skills Materials: Colored cups, different color buttons Teaching strategies: Place the colored cups on the table and allow each child to engage in hands-on practice using the colored buttons to sort them into their corresponding cups. Then engage the students in conversation by asking them, “How many buttons are going into the (red, yellow, green, blue) cups?” This helps promote the children’s critical thinking skills because they have to count the number of buttons going into their corresponding cups. Age appropriate: This activity is developmentally age-appropriate because they use their fine motor skills for this activity. They use their social skills by engaging in conversation and cognitive skills to think about how many buttons are going into each colored cup. They also learn math skills and different colors....
