ACTIVE LISTENING EXERCISE Name: Sheeza Rajan - 301107288 To whom did you speak and on what topic: I spoke with Ohizoje Daniel and our discussion topic was Religion. Ohizoje was opposing and I was supporting Religion. 1. How did it feel to have some listen actively to you? It felt great, being listen gave me enough confidence to speak openly in front of people. Even though ojay was opposing, he considered my point of view and presented his perspective towards the topic. It encouraged me to come forward and discuss more points to keep discussing the topic. 2. How did your practice of active listening impact your views of, or attitude toward your partner or their position on the topic? As he was presenting his points and explaining them by giving examples I understood why he was opposing and why does he feel this way about Religion. Since it is a very sensitive topic, I got offended in no time, because he was opposing every points which I explained, I came to know that in reality he was not against the values and the teachings but those people using Religion as an excuse to hurt others or to do bad things. 3. Do you feel “recognized” by the other person even though they disagree with your position on the topic? Yes, even though we were discussing at first and started debating in no time, there was mutual respect for each other and we were actively listening and trying to understand each other ’s point of view. Another thing, I realized that, we both were addressing each other by our names while explaining each point, which for me is an important thing. It makes me feel recognized by the other person when they discuss something and remembers your name.

4. Do you feel that you more effectively “recognize” the other person because of this exercise? Yes, I and ojay are friends from Semester 1, we are also in the same group for assignments and everything but I did not now his point of view about Religion until now. He made some very good points while explaining and he is a good listener too. He respected my thinking and presented his point of view in a polite manner. 5. What was the most interesting part of this experience for you? The most interesting part of this experience for me was that we both belong to a very different place, culture, values, and ethics. But the way we were discussing about Religion, I felt some connection in the topic because we both learned a few things about our culture and so we had a lot to discuss about. 6. What was the most difficult part of this experience for you? The most difficult part for me was that, I was trying very hard to turn his point of view as he was opposing Religion. Every time he was opposing I was trying to make sure that how can I explain him and convince him that Religion is not a bad thing....
