LEISURE TRAVEL BASICS

Activity 3.2: Baggage and Airport Security Policies Rationale Baggage is any article, effect and other personal property that a passenger needs to wear or use for comfort or convenience during his or her journey. This definition usually applies to both checked and carry-on baggage. Each airline has its own set of rules regarding how many carry-on and checked bags passengers can have and what size and weight they can be. Understanding baggage terms will help you prepare properly for your travels, with checked and carry-on baggage that complies with airline policy. This will reduce the chance of complications and lost time at the airport.

Instructions 1. Read the information below on baggage allowance policies. 2. Review the list of items allowed in your carry-on luggage at the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) website. (https://www.catsa-acsta.gc.ca/en) 3. Complete the three exercises that follow. 4. Compare your answers with a partner and discuss any differences.

Carry-on Baggage Allowance Carry-on baggage is usually hand-carried by the passenger into the cabin of the aircraft and stowed in the overhead compartment or under the seats. Carry-on baggage allowance is determined by piece, by weight and by size. Each airline posts its specific carry-on baggage allowance on its website. If you are travelling with an infant on your lap, you may bring one standard carry-on bag not exceeding 10 kg (22 lb) in weight in which to carry the infant’s belongings, in addition to your own carry-on allowance. Some airlines, especially low-cost airlines, will charge fees for carry-on baggage. It is always best to check the rules of each airline you are travelling with.

Checked Baggage Allowance Checked baggage is weighed and stowed in the baggage or cargo compartment of the aircraft, which means that it is inaccessible to the passenger during the flight. It is sometimes called registered baggage because a receipt (baggage tag) is issued for it. In today’s new world of travel most travelers find there is a fee for checked baggage depending on the airfare purchased. 1
