Description

Alyia Tkacz 83 Stonemount Cresent Angus, ON L0M 1B4 November 2, 2020 The Right Honourable Justin Trudeau Prime Minister Langevin Block Ottawa, ON K1A 0A2 Dear Prime Minister Trudeau, I am writing to you today to bring your attention towards a serious issue that has been ongoing in Canada for many years and has recently resurfaced in a major way with the Black Lives Matter movement. This movement has greatly increased the awareness of systemic racism in our country, and many people felt as though there is more someone as powerful as you could have done. The fact of the matter is, those facing this systemic racism experience a strong association with other social determinants of health such as poverty and education. Racism can also directly affect one’s health through a common stress response linked with facing racism. The sad truth is, it is happening all across Canada and creating barriers in the equality we desire. These issues can even be seen in your place of work with another Member of Parliament, Jagmeet Singh. When Mr. Singh felt discrimination from other MPs and called them out, he faced the consequences and was forced to apologize, when in my eyes, he had done nothing wrong. Systemic racism is also seen in my small town of Angus, ON. I work in parks and recreation for my township, and just recently had to do something that made me sick to my stomach. I had been sent to one of the outdoor arenas close to my home and had to paint over racial slurs and hateful sayings that had been spray painted on the side of the building. It disgusted me that some people could be so hateful, and the worst part was, the vandalism was done by children. Clearly a change has to be made. Nobody expects an immediate response as change takes time but is something that everyone can affect. I hope I am not asking too much of you when I suggest you work to expand opportunities for people of colour, as well as educating those kids who do not recognize their privilege. Start small in places like schools located in neighbourhoods with higher amounts of people of colour and find small ways to improve the education of these students by communicating with the premiers of the provinces or territories these school are in and provide higher annual funding to these schools. This could be a start at increasing equality by providing these students with equal opportunities, as well as shrink the influence racism has on one’s health. Sincerely, Alyia Tkacz...
