Michelle Bonilla Professor Errol Houlder AFR 239-02 May 15, 2020 Chapter 22 Some of the events I found important for this chapter was The Orangeburg massacre, The black arts movement, the assassination of Martin Luther King jr., the watts riot, and the rise of black nationalism. Some people I found important was Malcolm X, Lorraine Hansberry, and Shirley Chisholm. The Orangeburg massacre was important because it was a civil rights protest that quickly turned violent when highway patrolmen opened fire on about 200 unarmed black student protestors. Three young men were shot and killed, and 28 people were wounded. This shows that even when African Americans tried to protest peacefully most of the times it ends violently. The blacks art movement was an important event because It inspired black people to establish their own publishing houses, magazines, journals, and art institutions. It led to the creation of African-American Studies programs within universities. The assassination of Martin Luther King jr. was an important event because his assassination led to an outpouring of anger among black Americans, as well as a period of national mourning that helped speed the way for an equal housing bill that would be the last significant legislative achievement of the civil rights era. The watts riot was an important event because the cause of this riot shows that African Americans had to go through a lot just so that the white race could accept them as people just like them. The cause of this riot was the arrest of an African American man, Marquette Frye, by a white California Highway Patrol officer on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. The rise of black nationalism was an important event because black nationalism influenced the Black Panther Party and the broader Black Power movement. Black nationalism also empowered African Americans. Black nationalism also influenced the black Islam movement. Malcolm X was an important person because he was an influential figure in the Civil Rights Movement. He was also known for his staunch and controversial black racial advocacy, and for his time spent as the vocal spokesperson of the Nation of Islam. Malcolm X also advocated for the complete separation of African Americans from whites. He proposed that African Americans should return to Africa and that, in the interim, a separate country for black people in America should be created. Lorraine Hansberry was an important person because she was the first black playwright and the youngest American to win a New York Critics' Circle award. Throughout her life she was heavily involved in civil rights. She also wrote a play about a struggling black family that got great success. Hansberry understood the struggle against white supremacy to be interlinked with the program of the Communist Party. Shirley Chisholm was an important person because she was the first black woman elected to the United States Congress, and she represented New York's 12th congressional district for

seven terms from 1969 to 1983. This was huge back then since the black community was never represented in politics....
