AHIST 1401 Learning Journal Unit 8...

Description

Using all that you have learned in this course, explain how the study of Art History can help someone better understand different cultures. Please include an example of how your own understanding of a different culture changed

In the first Journal of this course I stated that I have, some knowledge of art however was enthusiastic to learn and also noted that I had immediately started to notice works of art that I had otherwise been oblivious to me. The study of Art History gives an understanding into the origin of cultures, new cultures, a new understanding and awareness of cross culture. The culture, political point of views, victories and struggles of people, groups and countries. There is also the lesson of the connection between recorded art, literature and photographic art.

In this course, I have learnt different art periods and what culture each highlighted. The renaissance period artists based in Europe with emphasis on culture and science. Actually much of the art was based in Europe with later spreading to the United States of America. African, Roman and Greek culture was showcased in sculptured that ranged from self-pieces, deities to leaders.

Honestly , my understanding of the Catholic Church was changed and the culture of the time was a revelation. Though aware of the Church’s relationship with art, I was not aware of its history, culture and the interrelation. I learnt of the period before Renaissance where a painting was viewed as embodying a social relationship and Patronage. Learnt of commissioning of art, how commissions were by three parties; commissioning agent or patron (broker), the commissioner and the artist ("What made art valuable ‘then and now," n.d.). Because of this commissioning, a culture of public display of wealth ensued amongst some of the families requesting art on behalf of the churches to earn a high status. Families

offered loans to churches for religious pieces and alters were commissioned as a way to gain influence over the church and to highlight their message or culture. A culture of luxury, personal fame and prestige was developed.

An example of such a family is Sforza family who had influence on the church and commissioned paintings to highlight this message or culture. This family commissioned Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” and the painting portrays Jesus and his disciples at the last supper before he was betrayed based on the Gospel of John 13:21. The picture is on the wall of a monastery in Milan.

Overall, it has been a challenging however very fulfilling course that has broadened my outlook of art, what it represents, its message, effect on the cultures and traditions. I have appreciated your assistance, honesty and guidance. All the best in your future endeavours.
