Description

Complete the questions from Chapter 1 Case The rise of a unicorn – Airbnb pp. 24–27 listed below for your convenience. 1.

Carry out a ‘three-horizons’ analysis (Section 1.2.1) of Airbnb, in terms of both existing activities and possible future ones. How might this analysis affect its future strategic direction?

Horizon 1: The company provides an online booking platform which allows people to let out their property (house/private rooms/hotel room) to others for a short duration. Horizon 2: The company is moving forward from an accommodation booking platform to a platform that allows its customers to book local experiences and restaurants. It has also introduced Airbnb plus homes which lists quality and design verified properties. The company has also created an online community through OpenHomes which provide temporary housing for individuals affected by Disaster, for medical relief and to Refugees. Horizon 3: Airbnb is slowly moving towards becoming an all in one travel platform. It could be profitable if they could partner up with other brands and provide travel and holiday packages along with long experiences.

2.

Using the headings of environments, strategic capability, strategic purpose and culture seen in Section 1.3.1, identify key positioning issues for Airbnb and consider their relative importance.

Environments The biggest challenge for Airbnb right now is the legal issues they are encountering in regards to health and safety as well as the limit on the duration of the length that the hosts can rent out imposed by the authorities in New York.

Strategic capability Airbnb’s main strategic capability is that its allows people to rent out their own living space for a short period of time, which makes short period renting affordable and accessible. It is this strategic that has got them over 40 million guests in 34,000 cities.

Strategic purpose The company’s strategic purpose is to create a lifestyle brand, which is through its big worldwide community.

Culture The culture is important to Airbnb. It is aware of the fact that as the company grows it becomes less opens to discussion. To stop this from happening the notion of ‘elephants, dead fish and the vomit’ was introduced that implied that everyone needs to aired.

Following on from the previous questions and making use of Section 1.3.2, what alternative strategies do you see for Airbnb?

Affiliating with an airline to provide complete holiday packages is an option that the company can look into. Setting and monitoring quality standards for the accommodations can certainly improve customer experience. Airbnb can look into selling guest amenities to the hosts at budget prices, this could be set as a basic standard for all accommodations.

Converting good strategic thinking into action can be a challenge; examine how Airbnb has achieved this by considering the elements seen in Section 1.3.3?

Airbnb has demonstrated that they can evaluate their performance and can act on it by introducing professional photography after realising that they were not getting the desired results in New York. The horizon 2 analysis shows that Airbnb has interest in emerging activities. It has actively expanding its business by offering new services such as restaurants and experiences to its customers....
