WELCOME

Welcome to AIR200, This unit is a critical examination of the nature and problems of global capitalism. We focus on the politics surrounding way global capitalism is currently organised and the way power operates in this context. This unit focuses on the field o Global Political Economy (also referred to as International Political Economy, IPE). As such, this unit does not require pr existing knowledge about economics. We focus on the political and ethical dimensions of issues like the global financia global poverty, the role of Transnational Corporations and environmental degradation. We seek to identify the ways w all personally connected to global capitalism by considering the ‘everyday’ politics of consumers and activists in global economy and ‘regulatory’ aspects of the rules and policies that govern the global economy. This Unit Guide explains the aims of the unit, describes the assessment requirements, due dates, and details required assignments. You should always read this Unit Guide first - check it again when preparing to study or starting work on assignments. This unit considers how the field of global political economy helps comprehend the crises and problems facing the contemporary operation of global capitalism. It considers the key agents, structures and institutions which shape globa capitalism. The unit critically examines key political and ethical problems such as global financial crises, global poverty, corporate power, climate change and unaccountable global governance.

ASSESSING YOUR ACHIEVEMENT OF THE UNIT LEARNING OUTCOMES Overview In brief, these are the assessment tasks for this unit (details below):

Assessment 1 (Individual) – Seminar Exercises (1600 words) – 40% Assessment 2 (Individual) – Essay (2000 words or equivalent) – 50% Assessment 3 (Individual) – Presentation (400 words or equivalent) – 10%

Summative assessment

(tasks that will be graded or marked) NOTE: It is your responsibility to keep a backup copy of every assignment where it is possible (eg written/digital rep essays, videos, images). In the unusual event that one of your assignments is misplaced, you will need to submit the ba copy. Any work you submit may be checked by electronic or other means for the purposes of detecting collusion and/o plagiarism.
