3. Describe the key functions of system software. According to (Valacich and Schneider, 2014), the most prominent type of system software is the operating system (OS), such as Windows, Mac OS or Linux. OS’ coordinates the interaction between hardware components (CPU, monitor), peripherals (e.g., printers), application software (e.g., office programs), and users. OS are often written in assembly language, a very lowlevel computer programming language that allows the computer to operate quickly and efficiently. The operating system is designed to insulate you from this low-level language and make computer operations unobtrusive. Further, the OS provides a common layer for different underlying devices, so that applications only have to be developed for different operating systems, rather than for each different computer model. The OS performs all of the day-to-day operations that we often take for granted when using a computer, such as updating the system clock, printing documents, or saving data to a disk.

4. What are the three categories that describe the nature of information resources? Give an example of each. How do you characterize the relationships within each category of information? The three categories are structured, unstructured, and semi-structured. Information such as a transaction clearly stating the facts of the product, name of the customer, amount of money involved, and time, would be considered as structured information. A webpage with a title, subtitle, content, and a few images would be considered as semi-structured information.
