Probation: pass on prison with terms and conditions that are set by courts and by corrections  1841 in Boston was the first time probation was ever used  In NYC we have 20 different facilities that oversee probation 1. 1/3 of the facilities are for adults 2. 1/3 of the facilities are for adolescents 3. 1/3 for administrative  Probation officers are given certain luxuries such as o NYC probation officers are given NY state peace officer status. o Peace officer- can make unwarranted arrest.  Can carry a gun anywhere on duty or off duty  Only keep their status if they don’t abuse it o Because probation officers deal with individuals that are involved with crimes so they get this status so they are prepared for any situation. 4 purposes of corrections 1. Rehabilitation 2. Deterrence 3. Punish/Incarcerate 4. Retribution/restitution  Pay for your crime or to fix what you damaged (make the situation right)...
