JMM 245 Introduction to Electronic Media Alphabet Soup VO: Voice Over. A video clip with pictures and perhaps natural sound that an anchor or reporter reads over. SOT: Sound on Tape. Sound from a recorded segment that is not read over. Usually an excerpt from a longer interview. Can also be natural (nat) sound from a scene that us full and not read over. VO / SOT: Voice Over / Sound on Tape. The video clip beings with video that is voiced over and then a sound bite is edited on the same clip so it continues. PKG: Package. An edited combination of voice overs and sounds on tape, combined with the reporter’s voice track to make a complete pre-assembled story. CG: Character Generator. A generic term referring to any number of brands of equipment that perform the task of generating titles for use in productions. DPM: Digital Picture Manipulator. Also known as DVE. DPM is the term used by Grass Valley, the manufacturer of our switcher, for the device that can squeeze, stretch, or otherwise manipulate the shape of the video signal. VTR: Video tape recorder. Tape decks of various formats. SVR: Server. Disk based storage and playback on digital images and sound. SAT: Satellite. A signal that comes in after being uplinked to a satellite orbiting the earth and downlinked by various stations. SPX: A shorthand notation often used for Sports. WX: A shorthand notation often used for Weather. GFX: A shorthand notation often used for the word Graphics. NLE: Non-linear editing. Editing done with computer files (like we do with Adobe Premiere) as opposed to linear editing, which was done tape-to-tape but is now obsolete. OTS: Over the Shoulder. Can refer to either a camera angle or to the graphics commonly seen in news that appear over the anchor of an on-air anchor.

MOS: Man on the Street. Refers to a series of interviews or soundbites with average people in a public area about a topic of significance on that particular day. ENG: Electronic News Gathering EFP: Electronic Field Production SNG: Satellite News Gathering VU: Volume Unit (or Voice Unit). A unit to measure audio levels. NAT SOUND: A common abbreviation used to refer to natural sound, or sounds that are naturally occurring in a scene. FOLDBACK: The ability to hear the program audio back through the speakers in the studio. IFB: Interruptible Foldback. These are the small earpiece worn by on-air talent which feeds audio to them. Program audio is heard through the ear piece, but a producer or director can “interrupt” this audio feed to give specific instructions or change to the talent while the show is on the air....
