Description

Question 1 Frederick Douglass’s turning point in his career as a slave is during his fight with Covey. This is the climax of his Narrative. This point can be considered as Douglass’s turning point because it marked his turning from a demoralized slave to a confident, freedomseeking person. Douglass attains this transformation by matching and containing Covey’s violence and by portraying himself as Covey’s opposite. Question 2 This quote said by Nathaniel Hawthorne in his short story “Young Goodman Brown.” This quote explains how Goodman Brown’s loss of his wife resulted into him also losing his faith. In this case, it can be seen that his wife acted as the pillar for his faith and once she was taken, his faith became exterminated. This quote is important because it helps one understand that sometimes people can have faith or have the desire to do good not because they have a true relationship with God but because it is a societal norm, or something is making them to. Question 3 The quote represents a statement by Ralph Waldo Emerson in his work “Nature and Selected Essays.” In this quote, Emerson describes how after standing on a bare ground, he realizes that he is nothing. He sees an infinite space and all his egotism disappears. He now can see clear that he is nothing on his own and that there is something bigger than him called God. This quote is important because it shows how the universe is bigger than any person and since God is responsible for creating the universe all people are part and parcel of his creation. Question 4 The quote represents a statement from Frederick Douglass in the work, “Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass.” In this quote, Douglass recounts how he had learned how to

read and write. He states how the mistress gave him a hint of the alphabet and how he went ahead to get more information from the white boys that he befriended in the streets. The quote is important because it retells the slave life and how acquiring an education resulted in most of these slaves becoming free. It also shows how the little opportunity that one gets to do something could change their lives for the better. Question 5 The quote represents a statement by Walt Whitman in his poem, “Leaves of Grass.” In this work, Whitman talks to God “Lister up there” informing him that he wishes to know about his secret. However, he starts by informing Him that he is not worth being confided to. This is why he sees himself as contradicting himself. This quote is important because it shows how people contradict themselves when asking for help from their God....
