Reagan Mosca 5 November 2021 AMH2020 Professor Varga Reading Analysis 5 There are several parts to the feminist movement that are important and relevant. Before I begin discussing which aspect is most important to me, I believe it is important to define what the feminist movement is and distinguish the different aspects of the movement. To begin, the general/broad definition of the feminist movement refers to a series of political campaigns for reforms on issues such as reproductive rights, domestic violence, maturity leave, equal pay, women’s suffrage, sexual harassment, and sexual violence, all of which fall under the label of feminism and the feminist movement. More specifically, the Rosen’s chapter provided in class focuses on topics such as motherhood, sex, abortion, and careers. Out of these topics discussed in the chapter, I found the abortion aspect of the women’s movement to be most important/relevant to me. This topic is important to be because I never realized the struggle people faced before 1973, when abortion was legalized. While reading this part of the chapter, it was very eye-opening the extent women had to go to in order to get an abortion. For example, the author states, “Iris Manning, a college student, went through horrible ordeal. Estranged from her parents, she raised the money, she was told to strip and lie down on a dirty kitchen table. A friend held her hand. Without anesthesia, she screamed in pain as a leering sadist shoved a rubber hose inside her womb.” These details the author gives, about the abortion procedure, proves how invasive, unethical, unprofessional, and unsanitary it was back then to have an abortion. This also shows that only people who had the money and connections with

doctors were able to get an abortion, even though it was illegal at the time. This matters to me because I am a women and my whole life abortion has been legal and it is very interesting to me the difference stance of abortion from then until now, and how the views on abortions have evolved. For instance, abortion was not legal until 1973, which means until then this procedure was looked down upon. Nowadays, abortion is legal in all US states and every state has at least one abortion clinic. In addition, the actual abortion procedure today is more ethical, sanitary, and professional than it was back then. Furthermore, abortion was not the only thing illegal in the 1900s. In addition to abortions, birth control for use as a conceptive was not legal until 1960. This made it even easier for women to become pregnant if they weren’t using a condom. For example, the author states, “A simple mistake, the unwillingness of a young man to use a condom or his inability to use it effectively, the failure of a diaphragm, a vague comprehension of the ovulation cycle, or the belief in coitus interrupts as a fail proof method of contraception could, in an instant, change the course of your life.” Therefore, with birth control being illegal there were multiple potential mistakes that could still happen, leading to a women becoming pregnant. The potential mistakes are stated above in the quote from the text. However, currently, children and adults are more educated on how to stay protected during sexual intercourse, protection from both people are more commonly used, we now know more information on a women’s ovulation cycle, and we are now more educated on the lifetime effects of contraceptives. All in all, completely banning abortions and contraceptives can be a problem. People began to notice this throughout many years, which is why abortions and contraceptives such as birth control are legal today. The fact that these two things were illegal in the past stood out to me the most because, it is something that is somewhat normalized in our society today. In a

broader aspect, it is eye-opening how much the society has changed in a couple of years and how it will continue to change in years to come....
