"me talk pretty one day"...

Description

Mallory Sasak English 122 9/8/2020 2-5 Journal: Importance of Analysis The author uses a conversational style, with a humorous tone in "Me Talk Pretty One Day," to describe how learning a new skill like becoming fluent in a new language can be difficult and embarrassing. This essay aims to entertain the audience with the humorous side of learning a new language in a foreign country. Sedaris describes the context of how at the age of 41, he moved to Paris to learn French at the Alliance Francaise, where he is met with an abrasive teacher. He describes feeling alienated in a new country and wonders if he would ever speak French. This essay’s analysis taught me that sometimes knowledge does not always take the conventional route, and even when you feel like you do not understand something, you are still learning. Closer analysis of the author's claim allows a more in-depth knowledge and understanding of its content and context. One can better understand what the author wanted the audience to learn, understand, and experience once they have finished reading. Analyzing the author's claim can also help understand the reasoning for his writing style and tone. The writing structure helps the reader understand how ideas are organized and how they relate to the text's meaning. Analyzing the text structure allows the reader to gain a deeper understanding of the message being conveyed. The author's writing is effective in achieving the purpose of entertaining the audience with humor. I reached this conclusion with the very first line of this essay Sedaris says,

"Welcome to French class, where you must learn to juggle irregular verbs, flying chalk, and the constant threat of bodily harm." Without context, it does not make much sense, but it is clear the purpose is to entertain the audience with humor. The other purpose of this story is to describe his experience living in a foreign country to learn the language. This purpose is conveyed within the context; the author gives details about how learning French involves a period of hazing and not just from his callous teacher, all of France too. The author says, "the entire population seemed to be in on it."
