In “Mother Tongue” the context is the author telling her story about how her mother’s broken English impose limits in her life. It is about how being limited in the English language can impose limitations in society. It is about how she faces cultural struggles through her mother and how she herself struggles with her own identity when writing. I believe her tone is defensive and at times angry. In her article she speaks in defense of her mother.

By analyzing the author’s claim and structure of the writing, I believe I will better understand the article. By analyzing the article, I will gain more knowledge about the structure of the writing, including how to better identify the style and tone of the article. This will help me better understand the author’s point of view, and how she felt while writing the article.

I do believe the author got her point across. Just because her mother’s English was broken didn’t mean she didn’t know it perfectly. She mentions how her mother would read magazines and do various activities that involved her having to know English very well, which contradicted societies thoughts about her English....
