PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action - Similar to penicillins, destroy bacterial cell walls causing destruction of micro-organism - Administered IV or IM because decreased adsorption from the GI tract
Therapeutic Use - Broad-spectrum bactericidal medications with a high therapeutic index that treat a wide variety of infections
Complications - Most common: rash and diarrhea - Allergy, hypersensitivity, anaphylaxis, possible cross-sensitivity to penicillins - Renal insufficiency
Medication Administration IV Administration - To neonates, infants, and children verify correct IV concentration and rate of infusion with prescriber IM Administration - Injections should be made deep into the large muscle mass
Contraindications/Precautions - Hypersensitivity to any cephaslosporin and related antibiotics - Use with caution in clients with severe renal disease
Interactions - Disulfiram reaction (intolerance to alcohol) occurs with simultaneous use of alcohol and either cefotetan or cefazolin - Probenecid delays renal excretions - Calcium and ceftriaxone interactions
Nursing Interventions - Monitor S/S of infections before & during therapy - Administer orally (other drugs in class may be given by others routes) - May be administered with or without food - May cause false+coombs test & urine glucose
Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness - Reduction of manifestations (fever, pain, inflammation, and adventitious breath sounds - Resolution of infections
