ANTH 103 6/7 Portraits of the Whiteman The whiteman: a cultural representation (archetype) of anglo americans, a model of and a model for dealing w the Whiteman In multilingual sprach communities language varieties exhibit functional differentiation The times/places where you use different languages/varieties of language based on the situation If all speakers speak multiple languages, they’re using metacommunication to convey meaning. Metacommunication: communication (verbal/gesture/other) that indicates how verbal info should be interpreted. Ex: irony, sarcasm. Metacommunication: multiple meanings/interpretations possible Code switching: switching lang or lang style in a single communication Code mixing: inserting wds/short phrases into speech The jokes in Eng in Western Apache are an example of code switching Cultural meanings: scenarios of the joke are based on real situation the joke is a ‘secondary text’ that is a comment on the primary text Social meanings: relationships to joker and the butt Joke pattern Selective contrast: they choose things about the WM and the way the WM communicate that contrast w WA notions of culture there is an added distortion Inappropriate in WA culture: calling someone ‘my friend’ too quickly, personal contact, commenting on appearance, health, personal belongings.
