Lecture 1: 1. Bioenergetics- quantitative study of energy conversion 2. Metabolism- study of interconversion of molecules a. Humans- organize them into pathways but they are all continual and connected 3. Metabolic pathways- series of steps that convert one molecule to another. Almost always enzyme mediated (EZ - enzyme) 4. Metabolite- LMW CPD (compound) NADH) iii. Complex to simple molecules iv. Catabolic are convergent : ADCDEFGHIJKL and when catabolize -> XZ common metabolites (represent breakdown products) c. 2) Anabolic Pathways: i. Simple and synthesize into complex often reducing (NADPH) ii. Input of energy to be favorable iii. Anabolic are Divergent - XZ-> ABCDEFGHIJKL d. 3) Amphibolic Pathway i. Do both ii. TCA cycle 2. Pathways a. Multiple steps but Catabolic and Anabolic share steps (enzymes, intermediates, but operate on opposite direction) b. Catabolism and anabolism are linked such as NADH/NADHPH reducing -> atp energy c. Opposing (Anabolic and Catabolic): FLUX (rate of conversion) in opposite direction...
