Description

“Any Given Sunday” portrays the reality behind football as a sport that is brutally intense to its players even though in today’s day in age what we see broadcasted on television is portrayed as entertainment. In the movie, the Miami Sharks are trailing behind the other team in desperate need of a good play. They are able to gain possession of the ball through a fumble. Everyone on the Miami Sharks team is happy cheering along with the coaches, while the actual player, #58 who was able to make the fumble possible experiences dizziness and a trauma to his head. The coaches and everyone on the sidelines sees the entertainment and only the player knows agony (Stone, 37:30). Moreover, the sound effects as the players hit the ground or each other is not heard in real life through the television. However, this movie allows us to understand how physically intense the game is. As a viewer, the addition of the effects adds a sympathetic aspect that is lacking in reality when fans are watching their favorite team on television and only care for the wins and not the path players go through to make that win possible. In addition, in the scene (Stone, 1:40:25), Cap explains all physical suffering he is experiencing to Coach Tony. His spine, memory, tremor, elbow, rib, and neck, basically his whole body is suffering, as Cap said, “It’s my body…it’s not there…” (Stone, 1:41:35). Cap’s career brought many trials and triumphs. At the end, all those trials and hardships accumulated and affected his body more than ever to the point where “Even with all that, [he] would go back in a second…” (Stone, 1:40:50), yet he knows in his heart he can’t physically make it. As viewers, we don’t see this aspect broadcasted on television, anyone who cares about football watches the games and sees only the entertainment of it while the players experience the brutality of it afterwards. The violence the players experience only contributes to the viewers

entertainment and joy. The reality of the sport portrayed in this movie allows the world to see the intensity of football and what happens behind the camera in players personal lives....
