Description

Gloria Anzaldua’s “Borderlands/La Frontera” is her narrative of herself, of a border woman who grew up between two cultures, Mexican and Anglo. It speaks on her experience and struggles with life on the borders. She speaks of the borderland as an in between space where cultures and language meet. She talks about the history of indigenous migration. One concept she describes is the duality of dark and light/masculine and feminine energy relating to the indigenous goddess. She presents the serpent to represent the darkness and fears. She redefines the darkness as something empowering oneself and self-discovery. She also talks about the religious traditions that have influenced her. She explains how language can be a source of contradictory information. She describes being an outlaw from the enforced American English. Another main concept she focuses on is how language can be both used as a tool for oppression and unity with her culture. She describes the borderland as an open wound and says, “The US Mexican border es una herida abierta where the Third World grates against the first and bleeds. And before a scab forms it hemorrhages against the lifeblood of two worlds merging to form a third country—a border culture”. This shows border culture and the harm done to Mexicans who attempt to cross the border. She then urges for a new consciousness for an inclusive new world order. She says the ability to tolerate multiplicity in oneself is the way to develop a new perspective on the new world....
